The Croney Lab group at Purdue University is seeking a dedicated Research Assistant to support applied research and educational projects focusing on applied animal behavior, bioethics, and companion animal welfare. This position emphasizes the welfare of dogs and puppies originating from US commercial breeding kennels. The successful candidate will assist with applied research and educational projects in animal behavior, bioethics, and companion animal welfare, and will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing projects based on personal interests, enhancing their publication, teaching, mentoring, and grant-writing portfolios. They will collaborate with Dr. Croney, Director of the Center for Animal Welfare Science (CAWS), to devise and deliver high-impact activities.
The role involves working with colleagues at Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and College of Agriculture, other universities, USDA-APHIS, dog breeders, pet industry representatives, food and agricultural animal organizations, and various animal health, welfare, and bioethics experts. Travel for data collection as part of research studies is expected, so candidates must have or be able to obtain a US driver’s license. Candidates with interests or experience in behavioral genetics, epidemiology, and animal physiology are strongly encouraged to apply. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment are essential.

What We’re Looking For:
Education and Experience:
Qualified candidates will need:
- MS or MA degree in animal/veterinary (or other related) science or other relevant discipline (e.g., biology or psychology);
- Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of required education and related work experience
Skills Needed:
- Strong organizational, analytical, critical thinking, and oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency with scientific database usage
- Excellent time management skills
- Ability to work well within an interdisciplinary team with diverse backgrounds.
- Ability and willingness to assist with field research
- Ability to meet deadlines with strong attention to detail
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel to facilitate document creation, spreadsheet and database creation and management, conferencing, internet searches, etc.
What is helpful:
- Experience, coursework, or training in animal welfare science
- Proficiency in data analysis
- Experience working with plain communities, especially in extension/outreach
