What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant (Intermediate Care) position at Purdue University?
Purdue Veterinary Hospital is hiring an amazing Veterinary Assistant to support our Intermediate Care Ward team. The Intermediate Care Ward team provides 24 hour support to non-critical hospitalized pets and their owners. Veterinary Assistants will be responsible for patient care (walking, feeding, and cleaning), patient restraint for physical exams and sample collection, and assistance to the veterinarian and nursing teams for a variety of diagnostic procedures. The veterinary assistants keep the service running by stocking and ordering supplies, cleaning, and alerting the nursing team to any observed patient concerns.
All members of the team are respected for their knowledge and experience and recognized for their contributions to fantastic patient care. Veterinary assistants provide around the clock care, and schedules may rotate through day/night shifts as well as weekends and holidays. Schedules will be discussed during the interview.

This position could be filled at multiple levels (S2 or S3). The hiring manager will determine the job level based on the skills, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate.
What We’re Looking For:
Education and Experience
Qualified candidates will need:
S2 requirements:
- High School Diploma/GED
- One year of relevant work experience in a veterinary hospital setting or related animal experience
S3 requirements:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Two years of relevant work experience in a veterinary hospital setting
Skills Needed:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure in emergency situations
- Ability to read and write in English
- Ability to lift and carry 25-50 pounds frequently and 60 pounds occasionally
- Must have confidence around domestic animals and basic knowledge of animal husbandry
Preferred:
- NAVTA Veterinary Assistant certificate
- Experience working in a veterinary teaching hospital or multi-specialty veterinary hospital
