General Purpose

Oversee the operation of assigned lifts and activities, using proper and safe procedures for lift and activity start-up, safety checks, lines and mazes, loading and unloading of guests to ensure a friendly, safe, and efficient experience for resort guests, and employees.

Job Description

Essential Duties/ Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain documentation on lift operator, lift attendant, activities attendant, and ticket checker attendance and performance, for use in performance appraisals.
  • Work with operators, attendants, and ticket staff to form crews with team spirit.
  • Ensure proper and safe procedures are followed for loading and unloading of guests, using excellent guest service skills at all times.
  • Oversee start-up, safety checks, auxiliary operations, code 4's, completion of logs, to ensure proper procedures used.
  • Use proper procedures for pre-operational safety checks, relaying all information regarding daily logs to drive terminal, and inform Lift Operations and Activities Manager, Supervisor and/or Lift Maintenance of any unusual situations.
  • Implement and enforce safe operational policies and procedures for tools and staff. Ensure stations have all necessary tools and make adjustments/repairs when necessary.
  • Closely monitor employee performance to ensure that all company equipment is being operated in a safe and responsible manner, to minimize damage to company property and to the environment. Ensure completion of an investigation, if company property is damaged, to determine the cause of the incident.
  • Know and properly use all radio and telephone procedures.
  • Communicate mechanical information and problems to the appropriate maintenance team promptly.
  • Work closely with the Lift Operations and Activities Director, Manager, Supervisor and other Foremen.
  • Ensure engine room checks are performed throughout the day, being aware of sounds, temperature and alignment of machinery.
  • Provide continued training to operators on all aspects of Lift Operations, including mechanical aspects of lifts and activities, daily operation and inspection of all relevant tools and controls, snow removal (when applicable), and guest service.
  • Assist in training operators/attendants/maze controllers/activities attendants/ticket checkers to ensure established standards are met. Ensure operators/attendants/maze controllers/activities attendants/ticket checkers know and understand emergency procedures. Ensure operators/attendants/maze controllers/activities attendants/ticket checkers maintain close communications between stations on their assigned lift/activities.
  • Make recommendations to Manager/Supervisor about promotions and discipline of operators, schedule changes, tools/supplies to be ordered, etc.
  • Assist Lift Operations and Activities Manager/Supervisor with hiring and scheduling when needed.
  • Assist employees in achieving maximum efficiency in loading/unloading, lift operation, activity operation and lines.
  • Schedule CATs for overnight station maintenance.
  • Ensure tubing hill is groomed prior to public operation.
  • Keep operators informed with current technical, departmental and company information.
  • Work to build and maintain strong departmental unity, cohesion, and team spirit, emphasizing professionalism, safety, and high customer service, and appearance standards.
  • Oversee, monitor, and contribute to overall employee welfare.
  • Other duties as assigned

Other Responsibilities

  • Setup/tear-down of summer activities, lift ramps, etc.
  • Ensure proper opening and closing procedures for assigned pod.
  • Be proficient in lift and activity principles and terminology.
  • Have a well-rounded understanding of the lift and activity, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems and be familiar with location of all major components and be able to communicate this information.
  • Know signage according to CPTSB Rules and Regulations.
  • Be completely knowledgeable in all Lift Operations procedures and policies.
  • Know CDLE amusement ride regulations.
  • Adhere to and enforce staff adherence to Purgatory Resort and Lift Operations policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Excellent interpersonal communications skills and leadership abilities, basic machinery operation skills. Must be able to ski expert runs safely and in control. Alertness, speaking, reading and writing (English) ability, auditory, tactile, olfactory and visual discrimination, judgment, and patience are necessary abilities. Problem solving and task completion skills. Must be able to receive vehicle certifications, including snowmobiles, snowcats, trucks, etc. Must be thoroughly familiar with Purgatory rules, regulations, and procedures. Must have a thorough working knowledge of and be able to assist in training employees on lift operations; activity operations, including tubing hill, mountain coaster, and alpine slide; and ticket scanning. Must have basic carpentry, hand tool, and small power tool skills.

Education or Formal Training: High School diploma or GED. Must have previously completed lift operations activities operation, and ticket operation training. Must be able to pass a foreman qualification test prior to completing a lift operations and activities foreman training.

Vehicle Qualification: Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a background check with a clean driving record.

Experience: Minimum one season as lift attendant and one season as lift operator and/or 12 months previous ski resort management requiring similar skills and abilities.

Availability: Must be able to commit to a flexible work schedule. Flexibility regarding covering shifts is preferred. Must have snow sports gear in safe, usable condition that will pass a standard equipment check. Must be able to work holiday and peak customer periods.

Material And Equipment Directly Used

Ski lift machinery, ski equipment (dependent upon which lift stations assigned to), and hand tools, snowmobiles, snowcats and other heavy equipment, activities equipment, vehicles, ticket scanners, simple office equipment.

Working Environment/ Physical Activities

75% of the workday is spent outdoors in a ski resort setting with constantly changing weather conditions to include snow, cold and wet. 75% of the workday is spent standing. Constantly lifting, pushing, and pulling objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Occasionally carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Constantly using and monitoring controls that operate lifts and activities. Constantly handling objects and using hearing, near and far acuity, depth perception, color and field of vision.

10% of the time noise levels reach 75 - 110 decibels. Occasional exposure to fumes, odors and gases. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards. Occasional exposure to electrical, high exposed worksite, burns, and radiant energy.
