Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced CNC Machinist to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for setting up and operating manually controlled machines in precision fabrication, maintenance, repair, and alteration of machinery, parts, tools, and equipment. We have open positions for both day and night shifts at locations in Portsmouth, Virginia.
\n- Operate precision tools and machinery such as lathes, manual milling machines, drill presses, hydraulic presses, band saws, and various cutting tools.
- Fabricate and shape parts including tools and machine components out of metal.
- Safely and efficiently select, align, secure, and remove fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, and materials onto machines.
- Recognize and use inserts, fixtures, and tooling appropriately.
- Read and interpret drawings and blueprints and follow instructions to perform tasks.
- Determine the appropriate tools needed to complete assigned tasks.
- Use gauges and measuring instruments to ensure parts meet tolerance requirements.
- Perform daily cleaning and light maintenance on machinery and equipment.
- Track parts and jobs using job tracking systems.
- Work in a safe and responsible manner, ensuring a clean work environment and compliance with safety protocols.
- Perform overtime as needed, including evenings and weekends.
- Communicate and coordinate work with team members.
- Machine setup experience.
- Ability to load and unload parts.
- Proficiency in reading blueprints.
- Ability to run the machine independently.
- Ability to QC their own parts (final inspection will be done by an inspector).
- Understanding of speeds and feeds.
- Proficiency in MasterCam (doesn't apply to the manual machinist).
- Experience with Lathes, Grinders, Boring Mills, Planers, and Portable Tools.
- Proficiency in turn, drill, tap, bore, hone, and polish machine processes.
- Experience with large part machining (ship propeller shafts, ship steering gear, etc.) preferred.
- In-place machining experience is a plus.
- Forklift and crane operation experience preferred.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 3 to 5 years of relevant CNC machinist experience preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Familiarity with Fanuc, Mazatrol, Okuma, DMG/Mori CNC controls.
- Experience with maintaining 0.001” tolerances.
- Understanding of G, D, and T.
- Experience in job setup on vertical and horizontal CNC machining centers and CNC turning centers.
- Willingness to work at both Portsmouth locations as job needs require.
- Ability to learn new skills and tackle challenges effectively.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, with the capability to analyze and draw conclusions from data.
- Proficient in reading blueprints and using measuring tools.
- Basic math skills (fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions).
- Interest and background in engineering and mechanical systems.
- Ability to move products with an overhead crane.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs when required.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, reach overhead, stoop, crouch, kneel, climb ladders, and use stairs.
- Vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Time spent using a computer for tracking and administrative tasks.
