In this pivotal role, you'll work closely with engineers, developers, contractors, and the public to review building permits, process development applications, calculate system development charges (SDCs), and ensure infrastructure projects run smoothly from plan to plat.

Required Education And Experience

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
  • Four (4) years of technical related engineering experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in any specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for four (4) years of experience; or
  • Associate’s degree in areas of study listed above may substitute for two (2) years of experience; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as those listed above.

Available Schedule

  • 8 hours daily, Monday - Friday

  • Scheduled salary increases and a potential 2.5% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) are anticipated effective July 1, 2025**

Additional Supplemental Compensation for a maximum of 10% differential:

  • 5% for Master's Degree
  • 5% for FE or FS Certificate, Professional Engineer or LS
  • 5% Spanish/English bilingual pay
  • 2.5% for GIS Professional Certification

The anticipated hiring range for the Engineering Technician III position is $32.68 (first step) to $34.31 or $36.03 (second or third step). The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education, experience, and qualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials, alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

Examples of Job Duties

Essential Functions Of The Position

  • Produces, processes, files, and maintains a variety of records, maps, plans, permits, property descriptions and other technical-related information.
  • Assists the public with a variety of inquiries and requests for information related to public works services; pursues and resolves citizen complaints in the area of expertise.
  • Consults with and provides information to contractors, developers, other departments, agencies, and the public.
  • Prepares a variety of reports related to activities in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Assists in preparing City Council agenda commentaries; attends meetings and represents the Public Works Department.
  • The scope of the assigned area will depend on the departmental structure and is as the discretion of the Public Works director.

Positions Assigned To Development Services Are Responsible For

  • Reviewing and processes residential, commercial and industrial building permits.
  • Computing appropriate System Development Charges (SDC).
  • Preparing Public Works Staff Reports for development applications.
  • Reviewing final plat submittals.
  • Computing final plat fees.
  • Coordinate, manage and reviews financial security for public improvement projects.
  • Calculating SDC credits and coordinates disbursements.
  • Computing material quantities and cost estimates.
  • Interacting with other staff, developers, contractors, engineers, surveyors and the general public in relation to development projects.
  • Interacting and collaborating with field inspectors.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Performs work indoors in an office environment with regulated and minimal environmental conditions. This role involves time spent sitting at a desk, working on a computer. The noise level is typically moderate to medium. When fieldwork is required you will be exposed to the elements (rain, heat, cold) and work within congested traffic areas. The outside work environment can include walking on uneven terrain. This environment may also include interactions with the public.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. This position requires extended periods of standing, walking, and sitting. Must be able to crouch, bend, stoop, twist, turn, and balance. The employee regularly operates various office equipment, including computers, printers, copy machines, calculators, and telephones. Good eyesight, hearing, balance and dexterity are required.
