Job Overview:
The Estimator is responsible for evaluating project costs, preparing cost estimates, and ensuring accurate pricing for materials, labor, and installation. This position works closely with clients, the sales team, and production staff to deliver precise estimates that align with company objectives and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities:
Estimate Preparation:
- Analyze project specifications, blueprints, technical drawings and other related documents to determine material and labor costs and time requirements.
- Calculate square footage, material requirements, and fabrication expenses for architectural and custom stone projects.
- Assess project feasibility and identify potential challenges that may impact cost or production timelines.
- Facilitate meetings with sales, design, and production teams to ensure accurate estimates including machine time and labor requirements for project execution.
Cost Analysis & Pricing:
- Obtain quotes from suppliers and vendors for raw materials, transportation, and additional services.
- Develop cost estimates based on material costs, labor rates, and production expenses.
- Adjust pricing strategies according to market conditions, project scope, and client budgets.
Client & Sales Support:
- Collaborate with sales team to develop competitive and profitable bids.
- Communicate with clients to clarify project requirements and address pricing inquiries.
- Assist in contract negotiations by providing detailed cost breakdowns and alternative pricing options.
Project Coordination & Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of all estimates, bids, and change orders.
- Work closely with production and project management teams to ensure estimated costs align with actual project execution.
- Revise estimates based on changes in scope, material availability, or labor fluctuations.
- Maintain updated records of machine rates, stone cutting data and stock removal rates, freight rates, stone quarry pricing, etc.
Industry Compliance & Market Trends:
- Stay up to date on industry trends, stone materials, fabrication techniques, and pricing fluctuations.
- Ensure all estimates comply with company policies, industry standards, and client specifications.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in construction or related discipline or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Strong background and understanding of architecture and/or construction.
- Experience in estimating within the stone fabrication, construction, or related industry.
- Strong understanding of stone materials and fabrication processes.
- Proficiency in reading architectural drawings, CAD drawings, 3D models, and technical specifications.
- Familiarity with CNC machinery and digital templating preferred.
- Knowledge of estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple estimate and deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability to understand the market of a given opportunity and to develop pricing that is not solely derived on a cost basis.
- Strong understanding of cost fluctuations within the fabrication process to ensure accurate pricing.
