What are the responsibilities and job description for the Unit Secretary position at Queen's North Hawai'i Community Hospital?
Queen's North Hawaii Community Hospital is searching for Part-Time and Call-In Unit Secretaries within our Emergency Department. This position will be scheduled to work 12-hour shifts, days and/or nights. The Part-Time opportunity will work 3x 12 hour shifts per week and the Call-In is scheduled for 12 hour shifts as needed for coverage.
Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital is a 35-bed rural acute care hospital located in Waimea (Kamuela), Hawaii Island. More than 300 employees and over a dozen employed physicians staff the main hospital, as well the outpatient clinics located in the Lucy Henriques Medical Center, at our Primary Care Clinic located near Longs Drugs, and at our Specialty Clinic located in the Parker Ranch Center.

JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Verifies patient identification, and updates electronic health record with patient’s name, date of birth and chief complaint.
- Performs and coordinates administrative and clerical support functions to facilitate delivery of effective and efficient patient care on the unit/department.
- Fulfills duties of a PBX operator “after hours.” Relays and expedites incoming, outgoing, and interoffice calls for the department and hospital. Functions as the communication center for security, team leaders, supervisors, physicians, and plays a key role in emergency response communications.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Medical terminology certificate preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Six (6) months experience as a ward clerk, unit secretary, patient registrar, or comparable healthcare position; OR successful completion of a medical terminology course with six (6) months of customer service or clerical experience.
Experience to demonstrate the following:
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Good interpersonal skills and telephone etiquette.
- Knowledge and skills in use of general office equipment.
- Ability to work under changing situations and interruptions.
- Ability to maintain highly sensitive, confidential material according to HIPPA Privacy Rule requirements.
Job Types: Part-time, Per diem
Pay: $18.61 - $21.21 per hour
Expected hours: 12 – 36 per week
