Responsibilities
I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Accurately abstracts, codes, inputs and submits data on trauma patients receiving care.
• In collaboration with other members of the healthcare team, compiles and evaluates data using statistical methods, benchmarking data or other comparative measures.
• Maintains data in accordance with requirements of The Queen’s Medical Center (QMC) Trauma Services policies and procedures, and the State of Hawaii Department of Health, accreditation agencies and registries in which the medical center participates.
II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Essential: sitting, standing, walking, seeing, hearing, speaking.
• Frequent: finger dexterity.
• Occasional: stooping/bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, squatting, twisting body, lifting and pushing/pulling usual weight of 5 to 50 pounds of force, carrying usual weight of 5 up to 25 pounds.
III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.
• Subjected to noise and/or vibration from intercom, computer, monitors.
• Exposure to body fluids and communicable diseases.
• Working environment is sometimes stressful due to handling multiple tasks at one time.
IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Associate’s degree in health information management, healthcare or related field preferred.
• Successful completion of the American Trauma Society (ATS) Trauma Registry Course and the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicines (AAAM) abbreviated injury scale (AIS) course. If both courses have not been completed upon hire, both courses must be fulfilled within twelve (12) months of entrance into position.
• Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.
• Certified Professional Coder (CPC) preferred.
• Training in E-Codes and/or AIS coding preferred.
B. EXPERIENCE:
• One (1) year experience in medical coding/abstracting or in a clinical healthcare position (i.e. EMT, medical assistant, physician practice assistant, licensed practical nurse, surgical technician); or completion of a medical coding program may be substituted for the work experience requirement.
• Experience to demonstrate knowledge and ability to work with databases and Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of basic medical terminology anatomy and physiology.
• Experience with performance improvement programs preferred.
• Knowledge of ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM coding preferred.
• Prior experience with EPIC software preferred.
