The Sarah Belk Gambrell Center for the Arts and Civic Engagement at Queens University of Charlotte welcomes students, faculty, and staff and the greater Charlotte community to gather, enjoy and explore the cultural arts. This state-of-the-art facility is a place to showcase artistic talent, from poetry readings to world-class concerts, guest lectures by thought leaders, to art exhibits in its 1,000-seat theatre, 150-seat recital hall and two galleries featuring rotating art exhibits by nationally prominent artists and students and faculty alike.
SUMMARY: The Production Specialist is a hands-on role that takes pride in maintaining the highest standards in production services to ensure that every event meets or exceeds expectations. Success in this role requires an ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and keep organized notes for multiple events across campus. A proactive, patient, and adaptive approach and the ability to work collaboratively are essential. This full-time, benefits-eligible position contributes to the team that is committed to exemplary stewardship in the care, maintenance, and use of the Gambrell Center along with campus multimedia equipment for faculty, staff, special events, and rental services for Queens University.
This position reports to the Gambrell Center Technical Director and generally works 37.5 hours/week with a highly variable schedule that often includes early mornings, nights and/or weekends, given the nature of the position. This position is not exempt from provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible to earn overtime pay or compensatory time off for additional hours worked. This position is eligible for visa sponsorship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Experience and extensive practical knowledge of industry best practices installing, operating, and maintaining theatrical lighting, video, sound, and rigging equipment; experience reading and interpreting stage drawings, light, audio, and rigging plots; and knowledge of techniques of stage preparation and set builds for theatrical or related productions.
- Coordinate use of media equipment for faculty/staff/student events across campus.
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment and spaces, and coordinate repairs as needed.
- Conduct effective planning, organizing, resourcing, and executing large and small assignments through to completion. Communicate problems, opportunities, and creative solutions to the Technical Director.
- Enforce applicable university policies and safety codes to ensure safe event operations.
- Inventory supplies and ensures appropriate restocking ahead of need.
- Valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license or ability to obtain one before beginning work; required to travel between Queens’ main campus, Sports Complex, and other venues.
Non-Essential Duties
- Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and/or university needs.
- Perform stewardship duties within the Gambrell Center and other locations to ensure Queens is consistently represented in the best possible light.
Experience, Knowledge and Skills Required
- With or without assistance the ability to safely perform duties that require climbing stairs and ladders, going up in genie lifts, bending and twisting, lifting up to 75 pounds and working safely at various heights.
- Must be able to identify auditory or visual difficulties before and during events/productions and arrive at a logical course of action.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively with university and community groups, patrons, and volunteers while maintaining confidentiality of university information.
- Apply excellent organization and follow-up / follow-through skills to ensure objectives are met within established timeframes along with the attention to detail in producing error-free results.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and to effectively prioritize assignments to meet given deadlines.
- Strong team player and positive approach to work and challenges. Work effectively independently and as a member of a team.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, Mac OSX, Photoshop, video editing, and CAD Software experience preferred.
- Two or more years’ paid experience working in a similar capacity, or a combination of education and relevant experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
