POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Dean of Natural & Health Sciences, the Program Director for Surgical Technology is the manager of all functions associated with the operation of Associate in Science Surgical Technology (ST) degree program including the related Central Processing Technician (CPT) Certificate. The responsibilities of this position include all aspects of the program, including the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of the program, building and facilitation of clinical partnerships administration and the associated maintenance of CAAHEP accreditation, the development, validation, and revision of program objectives and courses. Activities include, but are not limited to, planning, organizing, directing, and recommending changes to the budget for ST/CPT, student counseling, and advising and teaching in the instructional program. To effectively perform these functions, the ST Program Director exercises a considerable degree of independent judgment, subject to periodic direction, review, and evaluation by the Dean of Natural & Health Science. In addition, the person has primary responsibility for supervision of adjunct clinical faculty and the student clinical experience. This position includes didactic, laboratory and clinical instruction as assigned.


EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE: Master's degree from an accredited institution and current valid NCCA-Approved credential in Surgical Technology (CST or CST/CFA) required or demonstrated eligibility to obtain aforementioned credential within three (3) months of employment.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A minimum of five (5) years work experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past ten (10) years. Experience in a variety of surgical specialty areas is required.

Previous teaching experience in a Surgical Technology program or clinical affiliate required with demonstrable proficiency in instructional methodology, curriculum design and program planning experience is preferred. Demonstrated proficiency in the following computer programs is required: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Applicant must have proof of valid, unrestricted driver's license.


Applicants must have a satisfactory health and immunization record, be certified in CPR for the Health Care Provider and fulfill any additional requirements established by the School of Allied Health and participating clinical agencies.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of Quincy College's certification program (Canvas, Quality Matters, Canvas Studio) for teaching or, in the sole determination of Quincy College, the equivalent of that program. Availability for flexible schedule, such as evenings and Saturdays.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible for oversight and organization of all Surgical Technology and Central Processing faculty, clinical and adjunct instructors, and students.


TRAVEL: Regional and regular travel required.


Job Requirements:


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Plan, organize, direct, control, and coordinate all activity surrounding program accreditation through the ARC-ST and Commission on Accreditation of Allies Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and work with the Dean related to Department of Higher Education accreditation;
Ensure program demonstrates by comparison that the curriculum offered meets or exceeds the content and competencies specified in the current edition of the Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology;
Assess the appropriateness and effectiveness of the resources described in ARC SSTA accreditation standards and make changes as needed;
Maintain knowledge of and compliance with the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education and NECHE standards for the curriculum as well as compliance with Massachusetts and CST standards, rules and regulations applicable to Surgical Technology;
Maintain knowledge of program, Divisional and College policies, procedures, and practices as well as communicate this information to full-time and adjunct faculty and insure that policies are supported and carried out;
Prepare and maintain appropriate documentation and reports of the Surgical Technology and Central Processing Technician Programs;
Collect, check adequacy, of and initiate permanent student records regarding clinical preparatory information (immunization record, CPR certification, malpractice insurance, physicals and health insurance information, CORI check) according to department's needs. Follow up with written documents and distribute to clinical affiliates;
Manage hiring process of Clinical Adjunct Instructors, including working with Human Resources staff on the development of job announcements, recruitment of qualified applicants, reviewing credentials, screening of applicant information, interviewing, and recommendations to the Dean;
Orient new instructors to the College, providing them with specific ST/CPT information and to their essential job functions with clinical affiliates, and assist current instructors to identify and meet their professional development needs;
Supervise ST/CPT clinical/adjunct instructors and provide oversight of management duties for all program facets;
Assume teaching responsibilities for content in appropriate courses within the ST/CPT and Science Programs;
Provide direction for instructors in the development, implementation and evaluation of program curriculum;
Maintain collaborative relationships with College personnel both within and outside the department;
In conjunction with the Dean and other program faculty establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with personnel in hospitals/clinical affiliate;
In conjunction with the Dean and other program faculty initiate and maintain contractual agreements with appropriate health care agencies for student clinical learning experiences;
Plan educational programs as needed for clinical preceptors and adjunct clinical instructors to communicate student's clinical objectives, expectations, and behavior while in the clinical setting
In collaboration with program instructors, recommend to the Dean, appropriate items for inclusion in the Department annual budget;
In consultation with the Dean, propose and implement budgeting and use of program funds;
Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies necessary to manage department based on student enrollment. Order supplies and equipment as needed;
Participate in recruitment activities on behalf of Quincy College and the ST/CPT programs;
Work closely with admissions and registration staff and other departments to ensure that accurate and up-to-date information is disseminated to all students and potential applicants;
In collaboration with program instructors and Dean address and resolve student issues;
Work with Dean to prepare and edit catalog materials and course descriptions related to the program;
Develop and submit to NHS Division Dean proposed departmental class schedules and faculty assignments;
Provide performance feedback and evaluation of program instructors and adjunct clinical instructors as well as identify and encourage professional development for teaching excellence and student success;
Assign each student and instructor to the clinical affiliate(s) and arrange their orientation to the clinical affiliate(s) as necessary;
Coordinates and participate in Program Review process;
Coordinate the planning and implementation of total program evaluation, including, the review and revision of department curriculum regularly (at least every two years), course outline, textbooks, library holdings and related materials used for instruction;
Ensure effective communication within the department, Division, College, CAAHEP, and Community;
Plan and hold regular ST/CPT Advisory Board meetings;
Ensure that all College reports and requested information are submitted promptly and accurately;
Sign and approve individual student schedules for course enrollment;
Ensure course outlines are accurate each semester prior to dissemination to students or publication;
Participate in meetings for the purpose of identifying and/or changing admission, progression, and graduation requirements for students enrolled in the Surgical Technology/ Central Processing Technology programs;
Maintain current knowledge regarding needed curricular changes via contacts with professional accrediting bodies and associations, advisory committees, employer groups, and others;
Maintain professional certification and seek opportunities for personal professional development, including but not limited to attainment of higher degree;
Maintain unrestricted license to practice as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) in the state of Massachusetts; provide evidence as needed to the Division Dean as part of the Performance Enhancement Process as well as Accreditation Review Committee on Surgical Technology requirements.
Maintain a regular schedule of office hours and provide appropriate academic counseling, advising, and tutorial support to students;
Participate in divisional and college-wide duties and committees as assigned;
Participate in mandatory training/coursework; including but not limited to:
