The Family Liaison’s job responsibility is to serve as the bridge between Portuguese-speaking English Learners and the designated school. They support this by focusing their work on assessing and addressing needs through communication, connection, collaboration, and celebration.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and Proficient in English and Portuguese is required
Interpretation Experience is preferred
Communication:
Through an appropriate cultural and linguistic lens, the Family Liaison ensures that the English Learners are aware of:
Knowing who to speak with when supporting their school experience
How to navigate the school system
Knowing what questions to ask
School based and community based resources
Tools and support they need from teachers regarding their progress and how parents/guardians can support their learning at home
School events
Volunteer opportunities in and outside of the classroom/school building
Connection:
Through effective communication and active listening, the Family Liaison will:
Connect teachers and students to improve student outcomes
Connect students with the resources available through Quincy Public Schools and Community Partners
Attend events specifically designed to address the needs of English Learners
Collaboration:
Through deliberate efforts, the Family Liaison will support the English Learners’ needs by working within different contexts:
Interpreter at building-based meetings
Support the students and teachers in the EL classes
Advocate for the students
Participate in professional development opportunities sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the QPS Family Liaisons
