Position Summary:

Our client is looking for an enthusiastic, ambitious team member to join their Human Resources team. This person must embrace change, be self-motivated, and inspire others inside and outside the department. The individual should be able to communicate directly and openly with all levels in their organization. There will be many opportunities for the successful candidate to engage in their innovative and creative problem-solving skills to help move the department to the next level. It is a must that the Human Resource Manager has a high degree of personal integrity in dealing with customers, superiors, subordinates, and co-workers and will represent our client in a professional manner. The successful candidate will live both in the big picture as well as in the details, desire to make an impact, and work well in a team and individually.

The HR & Safety Manager is responsible for managing and implementing both Human Resources and Environmental, Health & Safety policies, procedures, and programs for the facility. This role supports the overall development and compliance of HR functions, including recruitment, staff management, and training, while also ensuring the health, safety, and environmental practices at the site are aligned with regulatory requirements and corporate standards. The HR & Safety Manager will work closely with leadership to promote employee well-being, compliance, safety culture, and organizational effectiveness across the mill.


Responsibilities:

  • Set up and manage the HR department, providing leadership and oversight to the HR team while ensuring HR policies are adapted to the mill’s specific needs and aligned with corporate goals
  • Develop manpower plans, support workforce development, and lead recruitment processes for plant-level positions, ensuring timely hiring of qualified candidates; utilize both traditional and creative sourcing methods to attract top talent
  • Act as an impartial mediator in disciplinary procedures and employee relations issues; provide guidance to managers and staff to ensure fair and legal handling of employee matters
  • Oversee the creation and delivery of training programs, including safety, regulatory, and HR-related initiatives; ensure employees are trained in line with organizational and legal standards. Track and report on training completion and effectiveness
  • Lead the performance management process, supporting supervisors in employee development, and conducting performance reviews; create performance plans for both individual and departmental improvement
  • Ensure compliance with all governmental HR-related requirements, such as EEO, ADA, FMLA, OSHA, and worker compensation laws; stay current with legal changes to minimize company exposure to lawsuits
  • Champion and promote a positive organizational culture that aligns with company goals, fosters employee satisfaction, and supports business success
  • Maintain and continuously improve HR policies to ensure compliance with legal requirements and enhance operational efficiency

Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Responsibilities:

  • Foster a safety-first culture by leading safety initiatives, promoting continuous improvement, and monitoring the effectiveness of safety programs; ensure safety procedures are integrated into all daily operations
  • Lead safety orientation and ongoing training programs for all employees; ensure employees are educated on health, safety, and environmental protocols and understand their responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations, including OSHA and local environmental laws; with the support and direction of corporate EHS resources lead implementation of health and safety programs to mitigate risks and promote employee well-being
  • Conduct regular safety audits and investigations of incidents, recording findings and corrective actions; maintain records for regulatory reporting (e.g., OSHA logs, corporate logs, etc.)
  • Lead investigations into safety incidents, determining root causes and implementing corrective measures to prevent recurrence; maintain accurate documentation of all safety-related events
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness and response plans, ensuring the mill is prepared for potential safety or environmental emergencies

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • At least 5 years of experience in human resources management, including a minimum of three years in conflict/emergency locations
  • At least 5 years of experience supporting Mill/Plant wide EHS initiatives
  • Hazmat operator’s certification 40 hours and First Aid are a plus
  • SPHR or SHRM – SCP preferred
  • MS Office Suite Experience; HRIS system experience
