A horse paddock blacksmith ensures that horses entering a paddock for racing are properly shod. They also perform other tasks, such as removing worn shoes, examining hooves, and selecting new shoes.
Responsibilities:

- Inspect shoes: Ensure that all shoes comply with HISA regulations.
- Inspect hooves: Examine hooves for cracks, bruises, and other damage.
- Replace shoes: Remove worn or defective shoes and replace them with new ones.
- Attention to detail: Pay close attention to detail when examining hooves and selecting shoes.
- Communication skills: Interact with horse trainers and other staff members.
- Teamwork: Work well in a fast-paced team environment.
- Judgment: Make decisions and use sound judgment.
Job Specifications:
- Up to two years related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- General to advanced knowledge of the horse racing industry.
- General knowledge of horse racing rules and regulations.
- Advanced attention to detail.
- General communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are required to interact effectively with all levels of staff and horse trainers.
- General ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment.
- Displays willingness to make decisions.
- Exhibits sound and accurate judgment.
- Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.
- Monitors own work to ensure quality.
- Observes safety and security procedures.
- Follows instructions, responds to management direction.
- Must be able to pass IRB licensing requirements.
