POSITION: Adventure Tourism Guide
PAY RATE: $17/hr
JOB TYPE: Seasonal, April-November
Rail Explorers is an eco-tourism company providing top-tier outdoor recreation experiences. We connect the freedom of the outdoors and the magic of the railroad in a unique and fun activity that can be enjoyed by all ages. There are currently seven Rail Explorers Divisions: Cooperstown, NY / Catskills, NY, / Portsmouth, RI, / Boone, IA /Amador, CA / Bluegrass, KY / Elk River, WV.
Rail Explorers Adventure Guides lead guests on scenic outdoor railroad rides using our top-of-the-line rail bikes while ensuring a safe, timely, 5-star customer experience.
Successful guides are comfortable working outside and in nature, are physically active, positive, outgoing, and have excellent customer service skills. Flexible start/end dates and flexible weekly schedules are available and extensive training is provided. Advancement is also possible within the company, as Rail Explorers prefers to promote from within.
Responsibilities:
- Independently pedaling Rail Explorer vehicles on 6 mile excursions (2-4 tours per day).
- Greeting and communicating with all customers.
- Safely rolling and manipulating Rail Explorer vehicles on foot.
- Performing physical work, outdoors, and in the elements.
- Proficient in all Rail Explorers emergency protocol; assessing situations clearly, and quickly applying appropriate responses.
- Able to work in a fast paced, team environment, to maintain scheduled tour times.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism in accordance with the Rail Explorers Conduct Policy.
- Become proficient and maintains a high level of Railroad and road crossing safety
- Maintain proficiency in basic maintenance of Rail Explorer vehicles - training provided.
- Checking in guests using an online booking system and selling merchandise - training provided.
- Speaking in front of guests - approximately 40-60 guests per tour, following a script.
- Adhering to any applicable COVID-19 guidelines.
Qualifications:
- Required: Ability to provide excellent customer service.
- Required: Ability to perform physical labor (lift minimum of 50lbs).
- Required: CPR & First Aid Certification (provided)
- Required: Driver's License
- Preferred: Customer service experience, 1-2 years.
- Preferred: Outdoor work experience, 1 year (or 1 season, if seasonal).
Rail Explorers Operating Days:
Rail Explorers is a seasonal outdoor tourism operation, opening and closing dates will vary by location and weather conditions.
- May: 5 Days/Week (Thursday - Monday)
- June - September: 7 Days/Week
- September - October: 5 Days/Week (Thursday - Monday)
Rail Explorers Rhode Island Division’s season begins April 26th, 2025. Training dates will likely take place during the first week of April and will be shared upon hire.
