Head School Custodian
Reports to: Principal/Designee
Job Goals: To lead and manage all aspects of the school building's cleanliness, ensure facility maintenance, and provide a safe, well-maintained learning environment for the students and staff of Raleigh Oak Charter School.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months, unless otherwise specified.
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated utilizing a Raleigh Oak Charter School created evaluation instrument, in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in custodial services, preferably in a school or commercial setting.
- Proven experience and skills in basic building maintenance and repair.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to use all assigned equipment in a safe manner per manufacturer's specifications.
- Valid driver's license.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Custodial Duties
- Oversee and perform sanitation, cleaning, and maintenance of the entire school/facility (e.g., hard surface and carpeted floors, restrooms, waste disposal, windows, locker rooms).
- Sweep walkways outside of buildings and monitor grounds for debris.
- Ensure school grounds are clean and orderly.
- Manage cleaning supplies and prepare orders to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Empty and clean trash receptacles and manage recycling efforts.
- Shovel snow and apply de-icing compounds to walkways, as necessary.
Maintenance and Repair
- Perform minor repairs on furniture, buildings, and equipment.
- Conduct basic maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, unclogging drains, and fixing door handles.
- Assist in the maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems as needed.
- Perform basic grounds maintenance, including mowing lawns and maintaining landscaping.
- Perform preventative maintenance on custodial equipment as needed; reports any repair needs, safety concerns, and school property damage to the administration.
- Move and arrange furniture as needed.
Safety and Compliance
- Note and report all areas in need of repair and any hazardous or unsafe conditions to the administration.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards for all custodial equipment and cleaning materials.
- Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows, and setting up the alarm.
- Responding to emergency events, including assessing building safety
- At the start and end of workdays, opens/secures buildings, turns lights on/off, as scheduled.
Leadership & Coordination
- May oversee and provide guidance to other custodial staff (if applicable).
- Coordinate with administration on scheduling cleaning and maintenance tasks to minimize disruption to school activities.
- Respond to after-hour emergencies and inclement weather calls, as required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Set up and take down furniture and equipment for school events.
- Assist in moving heavy items when required.
- Perform preventive maintenance on custodial equipment.
All other duties as assigned by Principal/Designee.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to perform medium physical work.
- Capability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, climb ladders, and maneuver in confined spaces for extended periods.
Work may involve exposure to extreme temperatures and smells commonly associated with schools.

Pay: $37,445.00 - $53,747.00 per year
