Fleet Mechanic - Fleet Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and servicing complex mechanical, electronic, air, hydraulic and computer systems in county vehicles and equipment to ensure their safe and proper operation. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the General Supervisor and other Fleet Supervisory staff and is evaluated on repair efficiency, adherence to safety protocols, use of Fleet Software, and procedure application. Other duties may be assigned to the Fleet Mechanic as needed.
GOOD TO KNOW: This role is onsite at Keller Golf Course, where you will report to the Golf Course Superintendent for daily assignments. The Assistant General will oversee all aspects of your job, including timecards, certifications, and other tasks related to your role as Fleet Mechanic. This position has the ability to be called to assist Fleet related activities at other Ramsey County Central Fleet Shops when needed or during emergency operations.

- Maintain, diagnose, and repair all golf course equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes diesel, gasoline, 2-cycle and electric mobile and non-mobile equipment.
- Maintain, diagnose, and repair hydraulic systems, electrical systems, drive trains, brake systems and suspension systems.
- Maintains preventive maintenance schedules on all equipment as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Keeps a complete set of accurate records for equipment, parts/inventory, purchases, equipment conditions, costs of repairs, and preventative maintenance on all equipment using asset management software provided by Ramsey County.
- Recommends equipment purchases based on age, hours, maintenance costs, and reliability.
- Works with Superintendent and Assistant Golf Course Superintendents in training golf course maintenance workers on the proper cleaning of and safe operation of equipment.
- Uses onsite grinders, as needed, to maintain sharp cutting surfaces on all reel and rotary mowers, providing exceptional quality-of-cut performance.
- Maintains accurate HOC for reel mowers on a daily basis.
- Spot checks equipment for cut quality performance on the course and makes emergency repairs to equipment on the course.
- Conduct emergency field repairs to swiftly restore equipment to operational status or safely return it to the shop for more comprehensive repairs. Perform setup of new vehicles and equipment and any other modifications needed to improve safety, efficiency, and productivity of purchased units.
- Test and operate all vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and proper operation. Perform required safety inspections on all vehicles, trucks, and equipment, including DOT annual inspections.
- Effectively uses stick and MIG welders for equipment repair and for parts fabrication, as needed.
- Strives to stay current with industry trends and training, as needed.
- Maintains a clean, well-organized shop area that meets all OSHA and safety requirements.
- Utilize Fleet Management software to track and manage maintenance, repairs, and fuel-related activities, as well as to intake, decommission, and inventory vehicle and equipment parts.
- Own or have access to tools that will allow you to do the work of a Golf Course Mechanic and/or a Fleet Mechanic.

Education: High school graduation or equivalent and completion of a two-year vocational technical program in automotive, Fleet Mechanic - Fleet Technicians, heavy equipment mechanics, Turf and Utility Technician, Marine Technician or a related field.
Experience: Two years of experience in automotive or truck maintenance, Turf and Utility Technician, Marine Technician or related field.
Substitution: An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications/Licensure: Ramsey County will offer training and equipment to help achieve this licensing, however, the cost of the license is the employee’s responsibility. Candidates must either have a CDL Class A license or be able to achieve a CDL Class A license as a condition of passing probation. Candidates have 30 days from the hire date to obtain a CDL permit. Positions in this job class are subject to drug and alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation rules. Testing negative on required test is a condition of employment.

Candidates must either be D.O.T certified as a truck inspector OR must become certified as a condition for passing probation (1 year). Ramsey County will pay the fee for this certification.
The examination process will consist of the following section with each section weighted as indicated:- Training and Experience Rating = 100%
The examination for Golf Course Mechanic (Fleet Mechanic-Fleet Technician) will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions – do not mark “see resume” or “see work history” as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filled out a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Golf Course Mechanic (Fleet Mechanic-Fleet Technician). This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 30 days or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been certified and of their status.
The names of all applicants who pass the examination with a score of 70 or higher will be forwarded to the department for further consideration.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
