Lower School Reading Specialist
10-month Part-Time, August 2025

The K-4 Reading Specialist is responsible for supporting student literacy achievement, with particular emphasis on Tier II and Tier III instruction. The Specialist will provide individual or small group instruction to students who are struggling with reading. Along with the Director of Learning Services, the Specialist will work directly with lower school faculty and administrators in implementing a strategic plan to support classrooms in reading instruction based on school baseline data and early reading assessments.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
· Provide small-group classroom-based support to implement a comprehensive literacy program
· Work collaboratively with the faculty and administrators to collect and analyze data and implement a quality literacy program that is research-based, aligns with the science of reading, and meets the needs of the students
· Along with administrators, manage the Lower School’s reading assessment (screening and diagnostic) procedure, training, data collection, and collaborate with the school administration concerning meeting student needs and teacher professional development
· Maintain student records for tiered reading interventions
· Participate fully in professional development opportunities and professional research and reading
· Partner with the middle school and upper school learning specialists and the Director of Learning Services for continuity between divisions
· Serve as a member of the Student Support Team for the Lower School division
· Possess knowledge of Response to Intervention (RTI) approach to supporting students
· Communicate and collaborate regularly with grade-level teams, student support staff, parents, and school leaders
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or Literacy required
· Master’s degree in Education or Special Education preferred
· Reading Specialist Endorsement (or concentration) preferred
· Five or more years of experience in teaching lower school
· Familiarity with Science of Reading body of research
· Independent college preparatory school experience preferred
· Deep knowledge of reading, writing, and literacy development
