What are the responsibilities and job description for the Asphalt Raker position at Ranger Construction?
Job Summary
Distribute asphalt material across high or low areas of paved mat with a Rake or Lute to ensure a smooth, level surface for improved appearance and rideability.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1) Meet in main yard or job site as scheduled, check-in with Paving Lead and/or Paving Supervisor for pre-shift task assignments.
2) On arrival at job site, assemble for pre-work and safety meeting. Participate in meeting, understand the work goals to complete during the shift, understand job assignments. Ask questions as needed, offer comments, suggestions and ideas in a positive manner.
3) Take position behind Paver to monitor mat as it emerges from Screed. Identify high or low areas of newly-paved area, spread extra material into low areas and scrape off extra material from high areas to smooth surface of mat prior to Roller operation.
In areas where Paver cannot be used, distribute and smooth material in preparation for compaction by Roller or hand tamp.
5) When the Paver is not operating, perform housekeeping in area to ensure a clean, safe work area. Assist Operators in cleaning and maintaining equipment. Seek other tasks to assist in job completion. Idle time waiting for Paver to move must be avoided.
6) Safe working practices are a priority at all times. Watch out for self and others while working.
7) Actively seek opportunity to develop new job skills, learn new equipment operations and take on new responsibilities. Assist in crew member cross-training as directed.
8) Identify, report and/or correct work deficiencies, equipment or crew member issues. As assigned, step in to any crew member job to perform work tasks as needed. Inspect area and assist in removal of trash and debris.
9) Act in a professional fashion at all times. Serve as a role model for peers and others:

10) Perform other duties as assigned.
Work is performed out of doors on a roadway or job site at any time of day or night. The work environment is frequently dangerous due to traffic moving through the work zone. The noise level at a job site is generally very loud due to traffic and heavy equipment use and may cause distraction. Work is performed around and on hot asphalt, dirt, gravel and other road materials. Job requires work in inclement or extreme weather conditions, particularly in very hot weather. Use of personal safety equipment, such as a hardhat, vest and safety boots, is required. The workweek is frequently longer than standard 40-hour week and may be required for long periods of time to meet special project deadlines, especially if there are delays.
Knowledge of paving operations and job tasks is required.
Sufficient mechanical/equipment knowledge to identify minor problems and fix them and the ability to effectively communicate with supervisor or mechanic about other equipment issues that require repair. The ability to recognize problems and potential issues in the operation of the equipment is critical. The job is physically demanding and requires the ability to:
- see details at close range and at a distance, to judge distances, to see objects in the presence of glare or bright lighting,
- respond quickly (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, object) when necessary
- shovel, carry and throw asphalt weighing up 15 lbs.
- stand and walk for long periods.
- climb onto and off equipment or up and down a ladder.
- lift, carry and operate hand-held equipment and material weighing up to 40 lbs.
The ability to see and hear traffic and heavy equipment warning signs is required. The job requires the ability to manipulate equipment controls, levers, steering and other tools to operate paving equipment, hand-held tools and other job equipment. Good oral communication and interpersonal skills are needed to communicate with crew members, other employees and non-employees.
