Position Overview
At Rare, storytelling is a powerful tool for inspiring change and amplifying conservation efforts. The Social Media and Communications Storytelling Intern will have a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the art of storytelling and gain hands-on experience in producing compelling written narratives and video content to engage audiences, promote brand awareness, and showcase the human impact of Rare’s conservation work.
This 8-week internship with Rare’s Marketing & Communications Team is designed to focus on professional development, creative storytelling, multimedia content creation, and social media marketing. This is an excellent opportunity for conservation-minded individuals interested in communications, storytelling, and video production.
Core responsibilities:
Long-form narrative storytelling:
- Research, write, and produce a long-form people-centric story for rare.org highlighting an aspect of Rare’s community-led conservation work.
- Conduct virtual interviews with key Rare program leads and review archived B-roll footage and scripts to collect quotes and personal anecdotes.
- Review and strategically select photo and video assets; build the multimedia story in the digital storytelling platform Shorthand.
Video content and production:
- Collaborate with the team to conceptualize, script, and produce short-form video content for platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
- Help film and edit video footage to create polished, professional-quality content.
- Experiment with AI video tools for animation.
Social content and promotion:
- Conduct research on social media trends and competitor video strategies to inspire innovative ideas.
- Tailor and condense long-form content to produce bite-sized sharables for social.
- Cross-promote content by collaborating with the Communications team and track engagement metrics for performance reporting.
Targeted Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Pursuing or completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in Environmental Science, Behavioral Studies, Communications, or related fields
- Dynamic personality ready to contribute where needed
- Well organized, self-motivated, and able to manage deadlines independently
- Editing, writing experience, and research experience strongly preferred
- Superb attention to detail and proven ability to execute highly specific tasks
- Interest in conservation/environmental issues through coursework, work experience, or extracurricular activities
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in the workplace
- Native or near-native written and spoken English language skills required
