The Office of Student Life is a very fast-paced and multi-faceted office that provides comprehensive leadership programs, co-curricular activities and event services that enhance the student experience, support student organizations, encourage effective citizenship, develop student leaders, create community and build personal connections and individual growth through experiential learning.

RVCC has openings for Orientation Leaders (ROARS) within the Student Life Department. Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Student Engagement, with additional supervision from the Department's Administrative Assistant, Assistant Director, and Director, the Orientation Leader performs a variety of duties related to the planning and implementation of the new student orientation program.

The New Student Orientation Leader plays a vital role in welcoming and supporting incoming students as they transition into university life. As a representative of the institution, the Orientation Leader serves as a mentor, guide, and resource for new students, helping them acclimate to campus culture, resources, and academic expectations. The Orientation Leader will also assist with the planning and facilitation of new student orientation programs and events, ensuring a smooth and inclusive introduction to the college experience.

Essential Duties:

Orientation Program Facilitation:

  • Lead small group discussions, ice-breaker activities, and campus tours during orientation sessions.
  • Provide information to new students on topics such as academic resources, student involvement, campus safety, and student wellness.
  • Assist with the organization and delivery of orientation events, workshops, and team-building activities.

Mentorship & Peer Support:

  • Act as a peer mentor, offering guidance and support to new students during their transition to college life.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for incoming students, addressing any concerns and answering questions.
  • Promote engagement in campus organizations, student services, and academic programs.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Maintain regular communication with the Orientation Coordinator and other campus staff to ensure smooth program execution.
  • Collaborate with fellow Orientation Leaders and staff members to provide consistent and accurate information to new students.
  • Attend all required training sessions and team meetings prior to and during the orientation period.

Problem-Solving & Conflict Resolution:

  • Assist new students with challenges they may face during the orientation period, offering solutions and directing them to appropriate resources.
  • Handle sensitive situations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.

Promotion of Campus Resources & Opportunities:

  • Promote campus resources, such as academic support services, student organizations, and wellness programs.
  • Encourage new students to get involved in campus life and make connections with faculty, staff, and their peers.

Event Logistics & Support:

  • Assist with the logistics of orientation events, including registration, room set-up, materials distribution, and ensuring students are on schedule.
  • Help with the organization and coordination of any follow-up activities and events to continue supporting new students' post-orientation.

Job Requirements:


Applicants must be current RVCC students with at least 1 year of academic experience.

Strong leadership abilities with a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and a willingness to engage with new students.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to speak confidently in front of large and small groups.

Ability to work collaboratively with other student leaders, staff, and faculty members.

Strong interpersonal skills with a focus on empathy, patience, and conflict resolution.

Strong organizational and time management skills to effectively balance responsibilities.

Must be available to work during the orientation sessions and other related events, including weekends or evenings.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience in leadership or mentoring roles (e.g., student organizations, peer tutoring, or volunteer work).

Familiarity with the university's academic programs, services, and resources.

Social Media, video editing, photography.


Additional Information:


The starting rate is $15.49 per hour.

Employment will run for Summer 2025 from May 2025 - August 2025. There is also a need for the Spring 2026 orientations, held during January 2026.

Orientation Leaders are expected to attend several hours (6-8 hours) of training and/or planning sessions scheduled during the work week (Monday - Friday), which will be scheduled as needed.

Orientation Leaders are expected to work full 7.5-hour days on the orientation dates to facilitate each of the Orientation sessions:

  • Wednesday, May 21st (9 AM - 3 PM)
  • Wednesday, June 25th (9 AM - 3 PM)
  • Wednesday, July 9th (9 AM - 3 PM)

Afternoon Sessions:

Event - Afternoon Session

  • Wednesday, June 11 (11 AM - 5 PM)
  • Tuesday, July 29 (11 AM - 5 PM) *
  • Wednesday, August 6 (11 AM - 5 PM)
  • Tuesday, August 12 (11 AM - 5 PM) *

Virtual Session:
