Senior Associate – Real Estate Talent Advisory

ABOUT RCLCO

Since 1967, RCLCO Real Estate Consulting has been the "first call" for real estate developers, investors, public institutions, and non-real estate companies seeking strategic and tactical advice regarding property investment, planning, and development. RCLCO leverages quantitative analytics and a strategic planning framework to provide end-to-end business planning and implementation solutions at the entity, portfolio, or project level. RCLCO's three practice groups are Real Estate Economics, Fund Advisory, and Management Consulting.

A key component of RCLCO's Management Consulting Practice is the Talent Advisory Platform, in which the team's consultants assist real estate owners, operators, and investors with human capital-oriented solutions. Client engagements within Talent Advisory include:

  • Organizational Design: developing an organizational structure that supports growth, aligns with strategic objectives, and creates greater operational efficiency and accountability
  • Succession Planning: developing a process of selecting and developing key leadership talent to provide continuity, smooth transitions, and continued growth for the future
  • Compensation Consulting: designing pay practices to incentivize performance and maintain market competitiveness
  • Executive Search: identifying, analyzing, and recruiting industry talent to achieve strategic objectives, fill essential gaps in the organization, and meet succession plan goals

Executive Search assignments at RCLCO are approached in the same way the firm looks at any consulting assignment – delving deep into the client's business and organizational dynamics and utilizing our real estate industry expertise to advise clients on how to best reach their goals. While placing strong, long-term candidates is always our primary goal, we also add value to clients in our analysis of their organizational structure, processes, and capabilities during every search. The team has set itself apart from more traditional real estate recruiting firms due to our consultative nature and unvarnished evaluation of candidates, made possible from years of working closely with countless real estate companies.

The Executive Search team represents real estate clients across all sectors of the industry, including multifamily, mixed-use, industrial, office, retail, hospitality, and land development. Clients are most often developers, owners, and operators of real estate, including privately-owned companies, REITs, investment managers, family offices, and non-profits. Search assignments focus on leadership-level positions with a specific real estate focus, including individuals in the executive office, development, acquisitions, finance, capital markets, construction, asset management, portfolio management, and property management. RCLCO's engagements are retained searches, positioning RCLCO as a true partner to its clients.

RCLCO's different service lines allow us to engage with clients from a variety of different angles. Our Executive Search engagements often lead to, or evolve from, other work at the firm, such as strategic planning, compensation analysis, or market studies. The Executive Search team collaborates closely with other specialists at the firm, and the interrelated nature of our engagements provides an even deeper understanding of our clients.

RCLCO is headquartered in Washington, D.C. with offices in Los Angeles, Austin, Orlando, Denver, and New York City. The team comes from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines, though everyone shares a deep interest in the built environment.

ABOUT THIS ROLE

RCLCO's Executive Search business has grown considerably since its conception three years ago, now boasting a wide range of clients spanning the U.S. As a result of this growth, RCLCO is seeking a Senior Associate to execute search assignments in collaboration with the Vice President and Managing Director.

The Senior Associate will act as a strategic consultant to their clients. Through the process of identifying and placing candidates, team members have a hand in directing how real estate companies make decisions about their organizational composition and structure. By working with real estate companies across all geographies, sectors, and stages of growth, team members develop a deep understanding of the different players in the industry, how these players depend upon or compete with one another, and how organizations and teams are structured. Each engagement provides the opportunity to peel back the layers of an organization and help clients make strategic hires who can significantly impact a company's performance, portfolio, and culture.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Client Discovery: Participate in probing discussions with client leadership and hiring teams to understand company goals, existing team member capabilities and skill gaps, team dynamics, development/investment track record, and the existing culture.
  • Search Strategy Development: Determine the ideal candidate profile and where those candidates may work today. Weigh various trade-offs of candidate characteristics and how viable those profiles would be in the role, creating a prioritization of different candidate types, both on-target and a step or two removed.
  • Crafting a Job Description: Leveraging the Discovery process, accurately articulate the opportunity in a thorough job description that provides candidates with a compelling reason to raise their hand for the role.
  • Candidate Research: Identify a candidate pool from target companies, geographies, and skillsets utilizing a variety of online resources and digital tools.
  • Strategic Outreach: Contact targeted candidates with well-crafted, transparent messaging about the opportunity. Conduct phone screens with interested individuals and critically assess their viability and motivations.
  • Client Presentations: Clearly, concisely, and analytically present the viable candidates to clients, synthesizing their most pertinent characteristics as well as any potential concerns. Obtain client feedback and adjust outreach as necessary.
  • Project Management: Assist RCLCO's project lead to establish and maintain relationships with client stakeholders and provide regular updates to the client team on project status.
  • Candidate Liaison: Speak consistently with candidates, keeping them informed of the search steps, preparing them for interviews, and having regular temperature checks throughout the process.
  • Business Development: Assist Managing Director with research to inform pitches with potential new executive search clients. Contribute to the development of talent-related intellectual property as needed.
  • Relationship Building: Utilize the outreach process to help build RCLCO's brand and your own industry reputation as a talent advisor. Leverage your real estate knowledge to gain respect and trust, and build a network of leaders within the industry. Create genuine, two-way relationships that last long after the search assignment ends.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree with coursework in real estate, urban planning, business, organizational development, psychology, sociology, or similar topics
  • 4 years of consulting experience as a retained recruiter or an organizational/human capital strategist, preferably within the commercial real estate industry; candidates without consulting experience but with strong analytical and people skills from within a real estate organization will also be considered
  • A combination of strategic problem solving and empathy, demonstrating the ability to put themselves in the shoes of both clients and candidates to navigate sensitive conversations
  • Someone who finds fulfillment from learning about industry players, unwinding the intricacies of how the real estate business works, and constantly broadening one's circles, maintaining client and candidate relationships for the long term.
  • Results-oriented self-starter with a persistent, thorough approach to work
  • Confident, well-versed communicator who can get to the heart of candidates' skillsets and motivations, and effectively relay this assessment to clients.
