Position Summary:
Performs computerized permitting/licensing work for the Codes Department. Responsibilities include taking payments, submitting and issuing permits and licenses, scheduling inspections, creating reports, and other clerical duties including providing quality customer service in a fast-paced environment.
Examples of Work:
- Maintains specialized knowledge relevant to department assignments, for example, technical building permit information and building codes, and utilities information and applications.
- Performs general clerical duties such as word processing, filing, answering phones and referring calls, preparing correspondence, etc.
- Sets up contractors and submits payments for licenses along on a regular basis and verifying that all license requirements are being met.
- Receives and accounts for payments and receipts.
- Oversees the processing of applications for plumbing/building/mechanical.
- Schedules inspections in permitting software or with the permitting authority.
- Issues/tracks permits for building, electric, plumbing, mechanical, etc.
- Prepares construction and permitting activity reports.
- Tracks progress of all open building code applications/installations/inspections.
- Organizes and prepares permit applications. building plans. and documents for appropriate routing.
- Performs specific research tasks under supervision.
- Observes all safety rules and procedures.
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Building permitting and inspection process; GIS, BS&A, ACA/ACELA, PSO, LARA BCC, locally specific systems knowledge, or some combination is highly preferred, as well as a working knowledge of Microsoft Office software; contractors licensing and requirements; and standard mathematical and grammatical practices.
- Ability to: understand and follow instructions; operate standard office equipment, including computer, scanner, calculator, copier, etc.; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, building departments, and our customer base; and handle several items at one time accurately during stressful situations.
- Efficient, attention to detail, reliable, and a self-starter within a set framework.
- Able to make and keep good working connections with local building authorities.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
- High school graduation or its equivalent. With a strong preference for candidates with prior building codes and permitting experience.
