Work Hours

• The boiler plant operates 24/7.
• Shifts:
• 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
• 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM
• 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM
• Operators are typically assigned to a specific shift.

Responsibilities

• Boiler Operations:
• Operate and maintain 4 boilers producing 55,000 pounds of steam per hour.
• Adjust firing controls, fuel feeds, and air drafts for optimal combustion efficiency.
• Analyze boiler feed water and perform chemical treatments.
• Equipment Maintenance:
• Inspect, repair, and adjust boilers, burners, pumps, and water systems.
• Manage fuel oil systems, including storage tanks, leak detection, and delivery procedures.
• Operate emergency electrical generators during power outages.
• Water Systems Management:
• Operate and maintain the Medical Center’s water pumps, water softeners, and chlorinator.
• Support legionella prevention and potable water safety, ensuring EPA compliance.
• Safety and Compliance:
• Follow lockout/tagout, confined space, and boiler safety procedures.
• Maintain compliance with air emission regulations and spill prevention protocols.

Crucial Knowledge

• Steam generation and boiler operation principles (water tube and fire tube boilers).
• Use and interpretation of testing instruments, gauges, and control systems.
• Chemical testing of boiler water and adjustment of treatment chemicals.
• Fuel oil handling, including spill prevention and tank monitoring.
• Safe handling of gaseous chlorine systems for water disinfection.
• Piping system installation, maintenance, and repair, ensuring proper alignment, support, and expansion/contraction management.
• Internal and external boiler inspection preparation.

Licensing Requirements

• Must obtain a South Dakota Rural Water License for Basic Water Treatment.
