Job Overview
Teach students with Dyslexia across a variety of settings. Implement accommodations and modifications to help students with Dyslexia succeed academically.
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university; Master’s degree preferred
Valid Texas teaching certificate for subject and level assigned OR
Enrollment in alternative certification program (if not already certified)
Certification in the area of Dyslexia (Multi-Sensory Approach/MTA preferred)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
At least one year teaching or approved internship preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Be a role model; uphold school vision of nurture, character, discipline, and academic excellence.
- Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to help students with Dyslexia.
- Use the MTA program to teach students with Dyslexia.
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula for students with Dyslexia.
- Establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers. Participate in 504 meetings.
- Attend all staff meetings and participate in recommended training to improve job-related skills.
- Follow federal, state, and district policies and maintain confidentiality.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and electronic reports, records, and other documents required.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
- Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
- Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
- Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.
Working Conditions/Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
