The Substance Abuse Counselor (LCAS, LCAS-A, CCS) is responsible for providing confidential addiction counseling, education and support to individuals, families and the community and promoting healthy lifestyles and healthy choices. The counselor provides counseling and support to individuals and families experiencing addiction. This may include confidential individual, family or group counseling about the causes and effects of addictions, support for families dealing with addictions and/or referrals to treatment for individuals requesting this opportunity. The counselor will also provide education to individuals and groups in the community with a focus on high-risk populations. The counselor will be familiar with other services and resources in the community and work closely to provide information and support when required. Failure to provide adequate service will have a significant impact on persons faced with addictions, their families and the community as a whole. Promoting a healthy, addictions free lifestyle will ensure the health and wellness of individuals, family members and the community.

Essential Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Counseling Duties:

  • Responsible for Comprehensive Clinical Assessment of patients in acute care/detox/methadone maintenance. Assesses a patient's physical and mental status using best clinical judgment and assessment techniques deemed necessary and appropriate by the Medical or Clinical Staff at ROH.
  • Aids in identifying the need for treatment and identifying the most appropriate treatment option. Assists patients in locating funding sources for treatment.
  • Provides counseling and support to individuals, families, groups and the community regarding issues of drug and alcohol use, abuse and addition; available treatment and support options. Provides workshops and educational programs within ROH, as well as within the community.
  • Responsible for assisting patients identify their goals for treatment, for assisting patients in meeting and complying with treatment requirements, for assisting patients in meeting their goals for treatment, and for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment.
  • Collects and accesses relevant information and resources. Provides assistance to patients in obtaining gainful employment, furthering their education and re-building healthy relationships in their homes, families and communities. Helps maintain a resource library of information.
  • Creates and maintains written, current and accurate records including but not limited to records of number of patients served, all patient documentation reviews, all patient interactions, all community contacts.
  • Maintains open communication within the agency about suggestions for future presentations, programs, changes, and any other quality assurance and enhancement item.
  • Conducts all tasks with regard to all legislation, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures are being followed, including but not limited to the strict confidentiality laws, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Communicates and collaborates with other departments to improve interdepartmental relationships. Participates in interagency working communities through communication and collaboration.
  • Completes CCA, Treatment Plan/PCP
  • Working knowledge of ASAM criteria
