The IV Supervisor - Pharmacist is responsible for overseeing all IV department operations, ensuring compliance with USP 797, state, and federal regulations while maintaining workflow efficiency. This role involves staff supervision, quality assurance, and direct involvement in sterile compounding operations. The IV Supervisor will collaborate with pharmacy technicians, order entry technicians, and other pharmacists to ensure the safe preparation, dispensing, and monitoring of IV medications, including Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), antibiotics, and other sterile compounds.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision:
- Oversee daily workflow within the IV department, ensuring timely and accurate medication preparation.
- Supervise IV pharmacy technicians, providing training, feedback, and performance evaluations.
- Manage department scheduling, PTO requests, attendance tracking, and staff performance.
- Address staff performance issues and participate in hiring, coaching, and disciplinary actions as necessary.
- Collaborate with the Pharmacist-In-Charge (PIC) and leadership team to enhance operational efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with USP 797 guidelines for sterile compounding.
- Oversee the preparation, mixing, labeling, and packaging of IV medications, ensuring accuracy and sterility.
- Monitor environmental controls, including temperature, humidity, and pressure differentials, in compliance with regulations.
- Maintain sterile compounding records and documentation in Simplifi797 or similar software.
- Oversee the cleaning and maintenance of the IV cleanroom and sterile compounding areas (ISO 8, 7, and 5).
- Ensure proper maintenance and certification of infusion pumps and IV-related equipment.
- Work with nurses, physicians, and facility staff to monitor and adjust IV therapies as needed.
- Support data entry of sterile compounding orders and ensure follow-ups for continuation of therapy.
- Ensure accurate and timely supply ordering from various vendors and monitor inventory.
- Conduct regular audits of IV emergency kits (OSS) and associated supplies.
- Provide guidance on dosing antibiotics, TPN formulations, and other complex IV therapies.
- Ensure adherence to state and federal pharmacy regulations, including CMS, DEA, and OSHA.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA, Medicare Part D, and Remedi’s Code of Conduct.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and ensure staff are trained on safety practices.
- Promptly report any compliance concerns to management and document corrective actions.
- PharmD or Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy
- Active and unrestricted Pharmacist License from the Michigan State Board of Pharmacy.
- Hands on experience in home infusion & TPNs within the last two years preferred
- Strong knowledge of USP 797, aseptic techniques, and IV therapy best practices
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to multi-task, work independently, and lead a team in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency in pharmacy management software and documentation systems
