POSITION SUMMARY
The VP, Legal Counsel - Head of Delegated Litigation ("Legal Counsel") is primarily responsible for managing the Company's litigation docket arising out of the property and casualty portfolio business underwritten via delegated underwriting arrangements ("Delegated Claims Litigation"). Management of the litigation docket will include developing and implementing litigation strategies, managing external legal counsel, working with relevant Managing General Agents and third-party claims administrators, and ensuring efficient resolution of coverage disputes. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate closely with, among others, Claims, Delegated Underwriting Operations, and others in the Legal, Regulatory & Compliance group to understand and advise on legal and regulatory risks associated with delegated authority relationships and litigation with the potential to impact the business.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE :
- Leadership and Management
- Develop and implement strategic plans for managing Delegated Claims Litigation, to include :
- developing and managing panel counsel relationships to ensure high-quality and cost-effective legal services;
- implement and maintain reasonable, necessary and current litigation and billing guidelines; and
- fostering relationships with counterparts at other Syndicates to pave the way for effective communication on cases with multiple Lloyd's participants.
- Collaborate with Claims Adjusters and other departments to ensure timely and fair resolution of claims.
- Maintain reporting and analytical tools and communication processes to help track, manage and report on Delegated Claims Litigation to underwriters, senior management and the Board of Directors.
- Assist in the design, provision and delivery of targeted training for Claims Adjusters, among others, on issues impacting the Delegated Claims function; topics to include, among others, the US Court system, scope of coverages provided, claims handling legal requirements, and how to avoid bad faith claims.
- Delegated Claims Litigation Case Management
- Deliver strategic legal counsel to Claims Adjusters and third-party administrators in connection with claim denials to minimize risk of coverage litigation.
- Working with external counsel, develop and implement effective litigation strategies for individual cases that balance the need for high-quality legal representation with the necessity of controlling legal costs and expenses.
- Oversee the day-to-day management of all Delegated Claims Litigation, from initial assessment through resolution, including :
- Review and approve substantive pleadings;
- Manage case discovery, including ensuring consistent and accurate interrogatory responses, coordinating e-discovery processes to produce Company documents, and attending preparation sessions and depositions of Company witnesses; and
- Attend mediations, hearings, and other court proceedings as may be necessary.
- Review and approve settlement agreements and other ancillary agreements, ensuring they are in the best interest of the Company.

The full-time base salary range for this position is $180,000 - $240,000 per year; base salary offered may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The position is eligible for bonus and a comprehensive benefits package. This information is provided per the New York City Human Rights Law and applies only to positions in New York City.
