Assistant County Attorney
The Assistant County Attorney primarily performs legal counsel and support for the Rensselaer County Department of Social Services by representing the Department in Family Court. The work is performed under the supervision of the County Attorney, with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and applying legal knowledge to specific problems and taking appropriate action.
Typical Duties:
- Prosecutes child abuse and neglect proceedings in Family Court;
- Prosecutes juvenile delinquents in Family Court;
- Prepares pleading, appeals, notices, and other legal papers and documents;
- Examines legal papers served on, or filed with the Department of Social Services;
- Provide support for overflow of cases in all parts of Family Court with regards to Child Protective matters;
- Represents the County in various courts and legal proceedings outside of Family Court;
- Assists the County Attorney and Deputy County Attorney with various matters
Required knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics:
Good knowledge of office practices, legal documents procedures and law office routine; problem-solver and ability to exercise appropriate discretion; good communication skills, particularly in writing, concisely and effectively; ability to perform accurate legal research; ability to prepare legal documents; ability to read and analyze moderately complex material; good knowledge of the principles and practices of agency organizational functions, laws, policies and regulations; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; resourcefulness, good judgment, and initiative; tact and courtesy; exceptional organizational skills and time management, and appreciation for detail and confidentiality; and ability to maintain cooperative working relationships.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university as a Juris Doctor, admittance or pending admission to the New York State Bar and maintain good standing, and 2 plus years of legal experience preferable. The incumbent in this position is required to be a resident of Rensselaer County no later than within 90 days upon taking office and remain so during the entire term of appointment.
