JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision and direction of the Emergency Management Director, the Emergency Management Intern works with the processing and updating of mandated policies and plans, corresponding with other agencies and the public, community awareness activities and administrative activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: (Other responsibilities and duties may be assigned)
Coordination and support activities:
- Assists with maintaining, updating, and disseminating plans and reports related to Emergency Management as mandated by Minnesota State Statute 12.
- Assist with coordination of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and associated training sessions for all Homeland Security recognized disciplines.
- Provide for the health and safety of all citizens by assisting in the coordination of and attendance at meetings with public and private partners to achieve the Homeland Security Emergency Management cycle of planning, response, recovery, and mitigation activities.
- Maintains and inventories emergency management cache of response supplies.
- Assist in the coordination of recovery operations following disaster declarations with state and/or federal partners.
- Performs administrative duties for the Emergency Management Director, including but not limited to: press releases, maintaining calendars and schedules, creating forms and templates, compiling data for reports and providing excellent customer service.
- Participates in the development, review, and management of policies and preparedness to mitigate any event that could jeopardize the health and safety of the public.
- Displays an ability to anticipate hazards and problems and respond effectively.
- Displays an ability to work independent of supervisor.
- Performs other duties as assigned to support the emergency management program.
Project development tasks:
- Assist in the development and validate a county-wide mass shelter annex to support the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
- Develop a comprehensive resource manual to support the EOP.
- Gain an understanding of Emergency Operations Center (EOC) functions and create a fully functional alternate site EOC.
- Be readily available to assist with activation of the EOC as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Enrollment in or completion of a bachelor’s degree in Emergency Management, community planning, Public Safety, or related field in emergency preparedness.
Must have a valid Drivers' License.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure and policy manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the public. Ability to speak effectively before people or on the phone. Must have the ability to think quickly and possession of adequate articulation skill.
MATHEMATICAL and COMPUTER SKILLS:
General accounting experience. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Application and operation of computerized accounting systems and spreadsheets, using common accounting and spreadsheet software.
Computer education/experience is required. Working knowledge of multiple computer environments. A high level of computer competency with standard data retrieval, record management, and word processing software. Knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, and Internet.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work has potentially a minimal exposure to environmental hazards and conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
