What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intern, Virtual Reception & Placement position at rescue?

The Virtual Reception & Placement (VR&P) program, launched in March 2024, was developed to enhance capacity for domestic refugee resettlement in the United States. The program specifically serves Afghan refugees, Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders, and refugees from Latin America. In fiscal year 2024, VR&P welcomed over 2,200 individuals and continues to support new arrivals daily. The program offers critical resettlement services and supports successful integration during the first 90 days after clients' arrival in the U.S. 
 
Scope of Intern Work: 
The VR&P Intern will work closely with virtual caseworkers and program staff to ensure refugees and SIV holders have a smooth resettlement experience. Under the guidance of VR&P staff, the intern will assist in providing core services to clients through research, resource-sharing, referrals, and administrative tasks. This includes researching housing and employment resources, supporting caseworkers, supporting cultural orientation sessions, and contributing to the efficiency and success of the program. 
  
Commitment: 5 - 6.5 months starting as soon as possible, no later than January 2024. 20 hours per week. 
 
Responsibilities: The VR&P Intern’s duties may include, but are not limited to: 
Assist virtual caseworkers with pre-arrival tasks to ensure a smooth arrival process for clients. 
Support efforts to connect clients with educational, health, and social services. 
Attend training sessions and meetings related to resource gathering. 
Conduct research to identify housing and employment resources for clients. 
Support clients in completing applications for public benefits and other services. 
Coordinate and schedule client appointments as necessary. • Document client interactions following program guidelines. 
Input and maintain client data in case management databases. 
Collaborate with team members and external partners to enhance service delivery. 
Assist in the development of client-facing materials and resources, including basic graphic design tasks. 
Support the Cultural Orientation (CO) team by notifying clients of upcoming CO sessions and tracking attendance. 
Help the CO team with case noting client attendance and managing case materials. 
Assist in the creation, transfer, and secure storage of case archive materials using PDF generators and file management tools (e.g., Box). 
Contribute to quality assurance processes and maintain data integrity. 
Provide interpretation or translation services as needed. 
Perform other duties as assigned to support the VR&P program. 

Learning Objectives: This internship offers the opportunity to gain valuable experience in refugee resettlement, case management, and virtual service delivery. Interns will: 
Gain hands-on experience with best practices in case management and remote service delivery. 
Deepen understanding of the refugee resettlement process in the U.S. and the public benefits system. 
Develop skills in using case management databases, digital communication tools, and file management systems. 
Strengthen research skills and discernment of resources. 
Collaborate with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team working across the U.S. 
Develop a network with experienced practitioners and refugee resettlement experts at the IRC. 

Qualifications: 
Education: Open to students from all backgrounds, both undergraduate and graduate-level students.   

Work Experience: Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations is a plus, but not required.  Students with lived experience similar to the populations we serve (immigrants, refugees, newcomers to the U.S.) are encouraged to apply. 

Skills & Competencies: 
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders. 
Excellent written and oral communication skills, particularly in multicultural settings. 
Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving abilities and time management skills. 
High attention to detail and accuracy in work product. 
Basic graphic design skills are a plus, though not required, for supporting the creation of clientfacing materials and presentations. 
Strong organizational skills, especially in managing and tracking documents and case notes. 
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and familiarity with digital tools for data entry, research, and communication. 
Ability to assist with organizing and securely storing case materials using file management systems (such as Box). 
Fluent in English (written and spoken); proficiency in Dari, Pashto, and/or Spanish is a plus. 
Experience with PDF generators and file management tools is a plus. 

Additional Information: This is an unpaid internship position. IRC is unable to provide financial compensation or relocation assistance for this role.
