The Restorative Justice Institute of Maine (RJIM) is seeking a Director to lead our organization as we continue to expand and deepen our restorative justice practices throughout the state. RJIM is dedicated to fostering a restorative culture that prioritizes healing, equity, and community engagement. We are committed to promoting practices that reflect justice, inclusivity, and accountability.
As Director, you will guide RJIM through the next phase of organizational growth. Your leadership will center around restorative principles, decision-making, and community building. You will oversee day-to-day operations while contributing to the strategic vision and long-term sustainability of RJIM.
Position Overview
The Director will:
- Lead all aspects of organizational operations, fundraising, community engagement, and program oversight.
- Provide strategic leadership in alignment with RJIM’s mission, vision, and restorative practices.
- Foster a culture of mutual accountability and shared decision-making within the organization.
- Lead by example in embracing equity, inclusivity, and trauma-informed practices.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership and Strategy
- Collaborate with the board, staff, and community partners to set and implement strategic goals.
- Maintain and further develop RJIM’s restorative practices, fostering relationships with community partners, donors, and stakeholders.
- Ensure that organizational culture reflects RJIM’s core values of equity, justice, and community-based accountability.
Financial Oversight
- Work with the bookkeeper and finance team to oversee the organization’s budget, including ensuring the monthly reconciliation of financials.
- Lead the creation of annual budgets and ensure proper financial reporting to the board of directors.
- Oversee grants, contracts, and major fundraising campaigns, building and stewarding relationships with donors, and managing deliverables for funders.
- Ensure timely filing of taxes and compliance with legal and financial regulations (e.g., Form 990, quarterly tax filings, insurance renewals).
Fundraising and Development
- Lead the development team in identifying and applying for new grants, stewarding relationships with major donors, and managing fundraising campaigns.
- Collaborate with staff and board members to cultivate relationships with funders and community partners, ensuring clear communication around the impact of RJIM’s work.
- Track and report on grant deliverables, ensuring accountability to funders.
Human Resources and Staff Development
- Provide mentorship, support, and oversight to staff, fostering professional development and growth.
- Create and maintain clear and inclusive policies and procedures for staff, including onboarding, conflict resolution, and performance reviews.
- Supervise volunteers and interns, ensuring they are integrated into RJIM’s work and supported in their roles.
- Lead staff check-ins, conflict resolution processes, and accountability measures with a restorative approach.
Administrative Oversight
- Oversee administrative functions, including managing technology platforms (Google Drive, Airtable, WeWorked, Basecamp, Zoom, Gusto), organizing office spaces, and maintaining organizational files.
- Ensure that all insurance policies, contracts, and organizational filings are up to date and well-documented.
- Support the transition and onboarding of new staff by organizing job descriptions, confidentiality agreements, and technology access.
Community Engagement and Communications
- Serve as the public representative of RJIM, building and maintaining relationships with community members, nonprofit leaders, and other restorative justice advocates.
- Oversee communications strategies, including social media, newsletters, and public events, ensuring alignment with RJIM’s mission and values.
- Work to expand RJIM’s reach through partnerships, advocacy, and training efforts.
Board Development and Support
- Work with the board of directors to support organizational governance and recruit new board members who reflect RJIM’s values and community.
- Provide regular updates to the board on finances, program outcomes, and strategic initiatives.
- Collaborate with the board to develop and implement long-term strategic plans.
Program Oversight
- Oversee programmatic work, ensuring that all programs align with RJIM’s restorative principles and strategic goals.
- Track outcomes for programmatic initiatives, including case management and community engagement efforts.
- Ensure compliance with all grant requirements and deliverables, particularly with large partners such as the Department of Corrections (DOC).
