This role supports all surgical procedures and will assist with routine orthopedic procedures, including the application and removal of casts, splints, braces, bandages, slings, and durable medical equipment (DME). The ideal candidate will be proficient in both clinical procedures and patient support while also maintaining a patient-centered and compassionate approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply all types of orthopedic immobilization devices (casts, splints, braces, slings, etc.) using proper positioning, angulation, and technique per the provider's direction.
- Evaluate and adjust orthopedic devices during follow-up visits to ensure comfort, effectiveness, and circulation.
- Remove casts, splints, and orthopedic appliances safely and efficiently.
- Fit and educate patients on the proper use of assistive devices such as crutches and canes along with accurately documenting issued equipment.
- Provide written and verbal instructions to patients regarding cast care, mobility, and orthopedic device usage.
- Prepare patients for exams and procedures by obtaining history, vital signs, and pertinent clinical information along with documenting in the EMR according to protocol.
- Assist providers with in-office procedures, setting up sterile instruments, and maintaining infection control standards.
- Apply and remove dressings not involving debridement; remove sutures and staples from superficial wounds under appropriate supervision.
- Support patient ambulation, transfers, and comfort during clinical visits.
- Maintain inventory and operational readiness of orthopedic supplies and equipment.
- Coordinate cast room activities with broader clinic functions for smooth patient flow.
- Evaluate new orthopedic products and supplies for compliance with clinical standards.
- Act as a preceptor for new Orthopedic Technicians and a clinical resource for other staff.
- Order radiology tests under Departmental Standing Orders and communicate instructions to patients and providers.
- Provide ordered interventions such as medication administration, specimen collection, wound dressing, and IVs along with documenting the patient response.
- Education:
- Graduate of an accredited Orthopedic Technician program or completion of equivalent military training within the last three (3) years. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may also be considered.
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) is required.
- Experience:
- Minimum three years of orthopedic technologist experience, including casting, splinting, and DME.
- Minimum of five years of total orthopedic technologist experience is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of:
- Basic human anatomy
- Common orthopedic conditions and fracture types
- Orthopedic surgical and sterile techniques
- Casting, traction, and orthopedic appliance applications
- Demonstrated knowledge of:
- Ability to independently perform and instruct others in casting and splinting techniques.
- Strong understanding of orthopedic equipment, procedures, and protocols.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills with both patients and clinical staff.
- Licenses and Certifications:
- Orthopedic Technologist Certification from the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT)
- Registered Orthopedic Technologist Certification from the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at the time of hire (must be from the American Heart Association)
- Working Condition:
- Ability to move and stand for extended periods and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
- Potential exposure to bodily fluids and sharp instruments.
- May involve irregular hours or extended shifts based on clinic needs.
