Rex
Austin, TX Full Time
POSTED ON 2/8/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/9/2025
About Us

Our mission is to catalyze human flourishing through stewardship, serving people in all nations. We seek a transcendent impact, second to none, making a permanent mark on history.

We aim to uplift investors, foster flourishing families, create enduring trust, and contribute to a more beautiful world through our investments, products and services, and new ventures.

Our investments are primarily in real estate, with additional allocations to tech, energy, and alternatives, employing a downside-protected, long-term approach to investing. We are grounded in timeless morals and seek to preserve and grow both investor capital and our own.

We Serve a Diverse Ecosystem That Includes

  • Multifamily apartment management with 20,000 apartments.
  • Hotel and office buildings.
  • Tech ventures
  • Insurance companies.

Our businesses, with over 500 employees, are primarily throughout Texas and Florida, but we aim to expand globally with our products and services, impacting people globally.

As we expand our portfolio through strategic acquisitions and structured finance solutions, we are seeking a highly skilled Director of Portfolio & Capital Management. This individual must be a hands-on executor, capable of driving debt placement and negotiations, quarterbacking deals from sourcing through due diligence to capital placement and closing, and ensuring accountability in property management performance and world-class investor communication. We are looking for a top 5% performer—an elite, missionary-minded leader who is finance-driven, a master of debt structuring and placement, and highly skilled in negotiations, lender relationship management, asset oversight, and investor relations.

Our Focus

  • Fanatical Investor Focus: Serve our investors by maximizing their return on equity while fostering human progress through stewardship of the assets and companies.
  • Operational Excellence: Ensure assets are maintained thriftily, performance is optimized, and banking and financial obligations are met and structured wisely.
  • Community Impact: Position assets as centers of profit and human flourishing for guests, residents, local governments, and the broader community.
  • Ecosystem Alignment: Provide seamless oversight across all components of the Rex ecosystem, including primarily owned multifamily apartment assets and other real estate but also tech companies.

Role Summary

The Director of Portfolio & Capital Management will play a critical role in overseeing the financial performance of our multifamily portfolio, ensuring efficient capital structuring, and managing lender and investor relationships. This individual will take ownership of placing and servicing debt, structuring preferred equity, negotiating loan workouts, and ensuring property management performance through data-driven oversight. This is a high-impact, strategic role that requires expertise in debt markets, financial modeling, negotiations, and asset management oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Debt & Structured Finance: Lead the placement of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, bank, and structured finance debt across existing and new assets. Analyze capital stack structures to optimize returns.
  • Refinancing & Loan Workouts: Manage refinancing efforts on owned assets, including placing agency debt and negotiating workouts on distressed floating-rate loans with debt funds.
  • Portfolio Performance Oversight: Ensure property management firms (including internal entities) are held accountable for financial and operational performance using key financial and operational metrics.
  • Risk & Leverage Optimization: Strategically evaluate leverage and financing terms to mitigate risk while maximizing cash flow and equity value.
  • Investor & Lender Relations: Develop and maintain strong relationships with agency lenders, banks, structured finance providers, and equity partners to support capital-raising and transaction execution.
  • World-Class Investor Relations & Communications: The individual must be skilled in proactive and effective communication, particularly if an asset is struggling. They must be able to navigate investor expectations, communicate clearly with banks, and provide transparency to equity investors, ensuring trust and confidence in asset performance and recovery strategies.
  • Disposition & Exit Strategy Management: Assist in executing sales and refinancing strategies, ensuring optimal exit timing and capital deployment.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • 7 years of experience in real estate finance, structured debt placement, asset management, or portfolio management.
  • Strong understanding of multifamily financing structures, including agency debt (Fannie/Freddie), bank loans, debt funds, and preferred equity structures.
  • Proven negotiation skills with lenders, investors, and property managers.
  • Strong ability to interpret financial statements, assess underwriting models, and drive data-driven decision-making.
  • Experience in debt servicing, restructuring, and recapitalization strategies.
  • Familiarity with value-add and core-plus multifamily investments.
  • Ability to oversee property managers and ensure accountability through financial oversight rather than direct operational involvement.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to proactively manage investor and lender expectations, particularly in challenging asset situations.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
