We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Commercial Real Estate Accountant to join our finance team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing financial transactions, preparing financial reports, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards for a portfolio of commercial real estate properties. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of real estate accounting principles.
Key Responsibilities: Accounting & Financial Reporting:
- Maintain and reconcile general ledgers for multiple commercial properties.
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR) functions related to lease agreements, vendor payments, and tenant billings.
- Record and review journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
- Perform monthly bank and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Prepare CAM (Common Area Maintenance) reconciliations and tenant billings.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Assist in preparing annual budgets and financial forecasts for properties.
- Monitor budget-to-actual performance and provide variance analysis.
- Work closely with property managers to track expenses and ensure financial goals are met.
Lease & Tenant Accounting:
- Review and interpret lease agreements to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Manage rent roll, escalations, and tenant chargebacks.
- Track and report tenant security deposits and rent payments.
Compliance & Taxation:
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and real estate industry accounting standards.
- Assist in year-end audits, tax preparation, and reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with external auditors and tax professionals as needed.
Process Improvement & Systems:
- Work with property management and finance teams to improve accounting processes.
- Utilize accounting software such as Yardi, QuickBooks, or RealPage for financial tracking and reporting.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Experience: 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in commercial real estate.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, QuickBooks, Yardi, MRI, or similar real estate accounting software.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of GAAP, CAM reconciliations, and lease accounting.
- Soft Skills: Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Certifications (Preferred): CPA or CMA designation is a plus.
