In 1979, the Rhode Island Blood Center was established by the hospitals in Rhode Island as a private, not for profit agency to collect, test, and distribute blood products. Today, the Rhode Blood Center is a division of New York Blood Center and is among the nation's premium providers of blood products and services and an integral part of the Rhode Island community's health care system. As of December 2018, the Rhode Island Blood Center employs approximately 320 full- and part-time employees. Responsibilities

  • As defined by CLIA/NYSDOH, this position is responsible for pre-analytic, analytic procedures, maintaining records of tests and for reporting test results in a high complexity laboratory.
  • This position performs only those tests that are authorized by the CLIA/NYSDOH laboratory director and performs only those tests that require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
  • Assign and supervise daily workload and activities of staff members
  • Performs moderate to complex serological investigations on patient and donor samples as needed.
  • Identify and record any problems relating to the product, process and quality system to ensure quality control and proficiency testing meet regulated standards
  • Review and interpret results prepared by staff.
  • Maintain adequate inventories of reagent antisera, reagent red blood cells, chemicals, equipment/instruments and laboratory supplies. Procure and maintain rare red blood cells and rare antisera inventories. Participate in American Rare Donor Program (ARDP) activities as required.
  • Assure compliance with applicable AABB Standards.
  • Ensure the maintenance of all files, records and forms pertaining to donor testing utilizing computerized systems.
  • Monitor and manage the inventory for the efficient distribution of blood and blood products, including rare donor inventories
  • Help develop and implement new procedures and policies for the operations of the laboratory
  • Participate in all regulatory agencies and internal inspections
  • Communicate with enterprise reference laboratories and hospital transfusion services to provide appropriate service and evaluate methods to improve services
  • Keep up to date on current blood banking procedures and research to assist/participate in education programs, seminars, and workshops. Present or provide consultations on immunohematology and current transfusion practices to various parties (continuing education students, clients, professional organizations, etc.)
  • Write and/or revise IRL procedures/policies in accordance with NYBCe policies and regulatory requirements. Develop and implement new procedures and policies.
  • Orient /train new employees. Supervise competency testing for new and current employees
  • Ensure proficiency testing is rotated amongst staff and performed in the same manner as patient/donor samples.
  • Provide on-call laboratory consultation/coverage as needed or assigned
  • Assist with new computer software, equipment, or test method validation, as required.

Qualifications

Education:

 Bachelor's degree with at least four years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience subsequent to qualifying of which at least two years have been spent working in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level, or master's degree with in at least four years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience subsequent to qualifying of which at least two years have been spent working in a clinical laboratory having a director at the doctoral level. Pursuant to New York Codes, Rules and Regulations, Title 10 Section 58-1.4 Qualifications of Laboratory Supervisor ( c ), there is no substitute for the experience criteria

 

Related Experience:

5 or more years of relevant technical and service-related industry experience that has supplied the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) is preferred

Prior supervisory experience

 

Required Licenses/Certification:

MLS, ASCP or equivalent

 

The proposed hiring range for this position is $87,000 - $97,000
