What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Assistant position at Rhode Island Hospital?
Summary:
Under supervision and following established policies and
procedures conducts experiments using in vivo and in vitro techniques. In
vitro techniques include cell culture transfection PCR Western blot drug
sensitivity testing. Creates and treats
mice with xenograft tumors performs minor surgery on animals. Collects and
analyzes data using statistical methodology. Prepares figures for publication. Reviews
literature in the field for informational purposes.
Responsibilities:
Manages laboratory and performs experiments. Maintains a clean and safe working
environment that complies with
institutional rules and regulations. Performs
routine laboratory cleaning and maintenance functions as required. Orders
supplies and equipment. Maintains and calibrates
equipment to be used for in vitro and in vivo experiments. Maintains cell cultures performs protein
RNA DNA extractions PCR Western blot ELISA.
Performs minor procedures and surgery on research animals such as creating
xenograft tumors monitoring of animals administering treatments harvesting tumors
performing euthanasia and harvesting tissues and organs for analysis.
Gathers tabulates graphs develops explanatory charts and
analyzes data using statistical methodology (GraphPad Prism).
Reviews literature pertaining to research being conducted in
the scientific area of interest for information in order to better understand
the research conducted and to gather data.
Prepares reagents and/or drugs for use in conducting
experiments. Participates in planning research protocols developing research
methodologies on providing input for the interpretation of data.
Works in a laboratory environment with possible exposure to
human and animal serum chemical reagents animal subjects.
Hazards are minimized with adherence to established safety
protocols.

Credentials/Experience
Completion of a Master of Science Degree in cell or
molecular biology or equivalent field.
Requires a working knowledge of common molecular techniques
and data analysis.
Requires a professional level of knowledge of the scientific
field germane to the research being conducted.
Three to six months related experience.
