GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
•Provides leadership in ASL development to students, staff, and families in acquiring, developing, and refining American Sign Language (ASL) knowledge and skills.
•Supports school-wide programming in ASL and Deaf Studies for students, staff, and families.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of the principal with latitude to exercise independent judgment in the performance of assignments. Work is subject to review periodically or upon completion for results achieved and for adherence to professional standards of conduct.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Generally none. Will work as part of teams and in collaboration with others to achieve results. May supervise specific ASL tasks of teachers and other staff and follow up on assignments delegated by the principal.
FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Provide instruction and support to teaching faculty in the development of content-specific ASL skills to deliver instruction to address the Common Core Standards.
•In alignment with National K-12 ASL Content Standards, provide individual and/ or group instruction to students, including designing and implementing lessons/activities that support student needs using best practice bilingual strategies.
•Develop, implement, monitor, and revise Individual Education Plans (IEP) writing goals for ASL language development.
•Create, maintain, and/ or coordinate the administration of ASL assessments.
•Promote ASL proficiency and appreciation of Deaf Culture awareness, school-wide, through coordination of various Deaf Culture events, RISDeaf Annual Arts & Culture Celebration, the Marie Jean Philip ASL Poetry Competition, and other similar activities.
•Work with the School Librarian to expand and maintain ASL and Deaf Studies literacy resources for students and staff.
•Keep the school community up-to-date regarding current research & best practices in ASL teaching and learning.
•Consistently model ASL/English bilingual communication.
•Provide ASL training and support for staff to achieve target scores on ASL proficiency assessments.
•Coordinate and assist with family signacy, workshops, & literacy events.
•Provide direct ASL instruction and support to families to develop ASL skills and knowledge to communicate with and advocate for their child.
