Museum Technician – Collections Moving Specialist
Job Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Museum Technician specializing in collections moving to join our team. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe handling, packing, transportation, and installation of museum artifacts during relocations, exhibitions, or storage transitions. The technician will coordinate logistics, adhere to preservation standards, and ensure all moving activities are executed smoothly and according to plan.
Key Responsibilities:
- Artifact Handling & Packing: Carefully handle, pack, and crate museum objects, including fragile and high-value artifacts, following conservation best practices.
- Logistics Coordination: Develop and implement moving schedules, ensuring all items are transported efficiently and securely.
- Installation & Deinstallation: Assist with the setup and breakdown of exhibitions, including mounting, positioning, and securing artifacts.
- Condition Documentation: Conduct pre- and post-move condition assessments, recording any changes or damage.
- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all moving procedures align with museum policies, conservation guidelines, and safety protocols.
- Team Coordination: Work closely with curators, registrars, and external movers to ensure smooth execution of transportation plans.
- Storage Management: Organize and maintain storage spaces, ensuring proper environmental conditions and object placement.
- Problem-Solving: Address any unforeseen challenges in the moving process to prevent delays or risks to the collection.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, art handling, conservation, or a related field preferred.
- Experience in museum artifact handling, packing, and moving logistics.
- Knowledge of conservation principles and best practices for object transport.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lift and transport objects safely, sometimes requiring physical exertion.
- Experience with inventory tracking and condition reporting.
- Familiarity with specialized moving equipment and rigging techniques is a plus.
Work Environment:
This role may involve physically demanding tasks, working in climate-controlled storage, exhibition spaces, and loading docks. Travel may be required depending on project needs.
