Job Description:
Job Title: Director of Health Information Management (HIM) & HIPAA Privacy Officer
Department: Health Information Management
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Summary:
The Director of Health Information Management (HIM) & HIPAA Privacy Officer is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the HIM department, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations related to health information. This role also serves as the HIPAA Privacy Officer, responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining policies and procedures to safeguard patient health information and ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Health Information Management Responsibilities:
• Oversee the HIM department, including medical records management, coding, transcription, release of information, and document imaging.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and accreditation standards.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures to maintain the integrity, accuracy, and security of patient health records.
• Supervise and support HIM staff, providing training and development as needed.
• Monitor and improve departmental workflows to enhance efficiency and ensure timely access to medical records.
• Manage reporting, audits, and quality improvement initiatives within the HIM department.
HIPAA Privacy Officer Responsibilities:
• Serve as the primary point of contact for all HIPAA-related matters within the organization.
• Develop, implement, and maintain privacy policies and procedures to ensure compliance with HIPAA and other privacy laws.
• Conduct regular training and education programs for employees regarding HIPAA regulations and patient privacy.
• Investigate potential privacy breaches, manage incident reporting, and implement corrective actions.
• Work with legal counsel and compliance officer to address privacy-related concerns and audits.
• Monitor regulatory changes and update policies accordingly to maintain compliance.
• Respond to patient inquiries regarding their health information rights and assist with release of information requests.
Required Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
• Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification or willing to pursue certification preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in health information management, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
• In-depth knowledge of HIPAA regulations, federal and state healthcare privacy laws, and medical records management.
• Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems, health IT, and data security best practices.

• Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
