Immediate Supervisor: Lead Behavioral Support Specialist

General Description:
Behavioral Interventionists provide comprehensive trauma-responsive behavior intervention and support to schools and students. Interventionists assisted by providing strategies and support to identified students presenting with social emotional and behavioral challenges that are impacting academic progress. Interventionists support school-based teams on best practices for school-wide behavioral strategies to prevent the overidentification of disabilities and reduce the use of exclusionary discipline practices.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Supports school teams throughout the multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS):

  • Work with referred students (i.e. defined caseload), staff, and caregivers for coaching, modeling, and supporting positive behavior
  • Provide individual and small group social-emotional intervention and skills development for identified students
  • Provide individual behavioral intervention for students who may be emotionally dysregulated
  • Assist in developing interventions, functional behavior assessments, and behavior plans for the purpose of providing a safe and effective educational environment for students with challenging behaviors
  • Assist team with the development of safety plans and engage with families to plan for student success
  • Collect, monitor, analyze, and discuss data to develop appropriate interventions and measure student progress in identified areas
  • Assist with case management and team problem-solving with other mental and behavioral health staff and community partners, as appropriate
  • Develop and conduct professional learning experiences for school personnel in such topics such as functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention techniques, and/or other issues relative to behavior management and alternatives to exclusionary discipline
  • Assists with student crisis intervention
  • Assist with students who are transitioning from alternative placements outside of the comprehensive school environment
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by keeping current with the literature and new research findings
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in special education, psychology, behavior disorders, social work, and/or counseling is required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum three years of successful clinical or classroom experience working with students with challenging behaviors required
  • Knowledge of current trends and methodologies used to address the needs of children with behavioral challenges
  • Extensive successful experience in analyzing, assessing behavior, developing, planning, and implementing behavioral interventions
  • Experience in data collection, evaluation, development, and implementation of positive behavior intervention plans, and knowledge of tiered intervention frameworks and current accepted best practices utilized in the full continuum of placement options for students with behavioral challenges
  • Knowledge of data tracking and collection, record management, and reporting methods
  • Demonstrated understanding of differentiated instruction
  • Develop and lead professional learning activities for individual schools and/or divisions-wide initiatives
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong time management skills and ability to meet multiple deadlines; ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Bilingual/fluency in Spanish preferred
