Medical Supply Technicians (MSTs) at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center (WY) and Northern Colorado VA Outpatient Clinic play a crucial role in maintaining sterile and reusable medical equipment. Here are the key requirements and responsibilities for this position:
Requirements:
- Knowledge of surgical instruments, sterilization techniques, infection control, and medical terminology.
- Completion of VA-mandated training, including HIPAA and infection control
- BLS certification required
- Medical & Immunization: Annual TB screening, proof of MMR and varicella immunity, Tdap vaccine, annual flu shot (or mask requirement), and OSHA bloodborne pathogen compliance
Other: US citizenship or legal work authorization, background check, VA security clearance, and adherence to privacy laws
Physical Demands:
- Standing and walking for the entire work shift
- Frequent bending, lifting, and carrying of medical instruments (up to 50 pounds)
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity are necessary for handling medical tools
Environmental Conditions:
- Work is performed in sterile and non-sterile environments, including decontamination and preparation areas.
- Exposure to biohazards such as blood, body fluids, and tissue.
- Working with high-temperature sterilization equipment.
- Certifications (Preferred but not always required):
Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the decontamination, assembly, high-level disinfection, sterilization, and distribution of medical instruments and equipment.
- The role supports surgical specialties, clinics (e.g. podiatry, ophthalmology requiring sterile processing services,
- Duties include:
- Cleaning and sterilizing medical instruments and trays
- Assembling instrument sets for surgical and clinical procedures
- Operating sterilization equipment (e.g., autoclaves, hydrogen peroxide sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaners)
- Performing quality assurance checks to ensure sterilization effectiveness
- Advising medical personnel on the proper use and maintenance of sterilized instruments
