Job Purpose
To teach and lead specific swimming skills and activities in the water for group and private lessons students and to educate the public about water safety.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain a valid American Red Cross Water Safety certification, a valid American Red Cross Basic Life Support certification, and a valid American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens certification.
- Maintain participant safety through preventative instruction. Understand and enforce all rules and regulations. Always be in the water with each class for all levels. Check the area for safety hazards and try to eliminate them.
- Maintain a high level of readiness. Respond quickly to all emergency situations and assist other staff with appropriate emergency and follow up procedures. Provide emergency first aid or call other staff for assistance when necessary. Report any accidents, unsafe conditions, or disciplinary problems on the appropriate forms.
- Provide exceptional customer service to all patrons. Work cohesively with all other facility staff.
- Teach swimming and water safety skills to students of all ages and abilities, following the curriculum outlined by the American Red Cross. Utilize all teaching tools provided, complete attendance records, track students’ progress, complete course completion cards, and submit all Red Cross Course Records.
- Attend, participate in, and complete all trainings as required by the facility Aquatics Director and/or General Manager.
- Work shifts scheduled on weekdays and weekends including mornings, daytime, evenings, and holidays.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Must hold a valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification and Basic Life Support Certification or be able to obtain certification requirements within three months of hire.
- Must be able to complete the pre-requisite skills test for the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course at the time of hire and throughout duration of employment.
- Must be able to work shifts scheduled on weekdays and weekends including mornings, daytime, evenings, and holidays as necessary. Flexibility will be considered for students.
- Must be able to attend, participate in, and complete all departmental and/or facility training sessions.
- Must display a customer-driven attitude and be a team player. Previous customer service experience is preferred.
- Must have a thorough understanding of swimming fundamentals, progressions, and techniques for swimmers of all ages. Must be willing to teach swimmers of all abilities, including students with increased needs.
Working Conditions
Work responsibilities will be performed in and around a pool within a recreational facility. Some work may be done in a standard office environment within the facility. Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to spend up to four consecutive hours of time in the water while instructing.
- Must be able to perform the physical labor required to physically support students of all ages in the water.
- Must be able to properly perform all skills in the curriculum throughout the course of employment.
