What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instructional Assistant/SPED - Substitute (On Call) position at Rio Elementary?
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction of an assigned supervisor, assists Special Education teachers by performing a variety of instructional, clerical and manual duties in working with elementary and secondary special education students; performs other related work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.Provides instruction to special education students as directed by the teachers to individuals or small groups in reading, language arts, mathematics, and other subjects.
2.Assists the teacher in supervising students during classroom activities; physical exercise periods, field trips, art projects, special events and various other activities as directed.
3.Confers, as needed, with teachers to meet student needs.
4.Assists teachers by making telephone calls and attending parent-teacher conferences and meetings.
5.Performs a variety of clerical duties including, but not limited to, duplicating, filing and maintaining various records and reports.
6.Operates various classroom office equipment including, but not limited to, computers, typewriters, telephones and copiers.
7.Assists in the loading and unloading of students from buses; assists students to classrooms and other locations and events.
8.Assists students with personal hygiene, as necessary.
9.Prepares students for lunch or snack periods by performing duties such as washing, setting up, cleaning up and assist in feeding students with eating problems; instruct students in appropriate table manners.
10.Assists students with various perceptual, motor-sensory and body awareness skills training.
11.Provides support to the teacher by setting up work areas; preparing instructional, motivational and decorative materials; operate audio-visual equipment; participate in special programs and activities.
12.Assists in administering tests and grading as directed.
13.Assists the teacher in maintaining the health and safety of special education students by being aware of environment and potential hazards of student actions; assist the teacher according to established guidelines and procedures.
14.Provides individualized attention and assistance to students to include times of stress, frustration or emotional upsets.
15.Provide necessary support for students in a school setting.
16.May translate written material from English to a designated second language and from that language to English; may translate conversations or provide interpretive services for non-English speaking individuals and others.
17. Administers routine minor first aid as necessary.
18. Performs related duties as directed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1.Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
1.Pass an examination demonstrating high school proficiency in reading, writing and mathematics as administered by the Rio School District.
2.CPR and Red Cross First Aid Certificates are desirable.
3.Valid State of California Drivers’ License is desirable.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1.Special Education classroom student environment.
2.Subject to sitting, bending or stooping, lifting and walking.
3.Subject to working in a school environment and exposure to sunlight and other outside conditions.
4.Subject to working at computer video work station(s), operating computer keyboards, looking at computer video screens.
