JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Library Media Specialist
Provides leadership, instruction, and consulting assistance to students and teachers in the effective use of library and media materials through a systematically developed collection of resources within the school and through access to resources outside the school.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
EXAMPLE (S) of WORK PERFORMED:
- Plans and implements the library/media program as outlined in the district’s curriculum documents by previewing, evaluating, and recommending library instructional materials.
- Organizes the physical layout of the library and coordination of the cataloging of the collection so that all materials and equipment will be utilized to the fullest extent.
- Make the library’s resources available to students and faculty through a systematically developed collection within the school and through access to collections outside the school.
- Serves as a consultant to district coordinators, principals, teachers, and research committees in the use of library materials and equipment within the library and/or in the classroom.
- Assists students and faculty in identifying, locating, interpreting, and using information gathered from both print and non-print sources for reports, assessments, research projects, and other applications.
- Shares involvement with the building and district administration in the preparation of the budget.
- Encourages independent study and leisure reading by students and offers reading guidance to students who have special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested by Supervising Administrators.
- Provides leadership to both students and teachers in the planning, production, acquisition and use of instructional technologies
- Develops and implements in-service programs for faculty members in the utilization of materials, equipment, and services of the library center.
- Serves on area-wide commissions and committees related to media, library services, and technology-based services and assists in the Title Funding Programs when funding is made available to the school library.
- Supervises the preparation of the annual Missouri State Media Standards Report.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (*)

- Daily attendance is required to provide daily support to students and faculty.
- Requires travel to work sites within the district.
- Classifies, catalogs, processes and organizes educational library materials; identifies material by label and written or computer listings; reads published articles, documents, news releases, etc. for information to use and/or pass on to others.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (*)
- Operates computer hardware for programming or applications; retrieves materials from storage areas; operates specialized equipment such as video recording equipment, etc.
- Provides written procedures for plan preparation and implementation.
- Discusses programs with employees, administrators, and/or citizens; provides instruction to students; discusses education programs with teachers, administrators, and/or citizens; guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work.
- Selects educational and/or library materials for students, staff and parents; reviews published educational materials for selection purposes; visually obtains information form computer monitor; visually compares labels and descriptive information of materials and equipment to inventories, physical lists, invoices, shipping orders, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Vocational Preparation: (Experience)
Librarian experience in a similar assignment preferred.
Education Preparation: (Formal and Informal)
Requires Missouri Library Media Specialist certification.
