The Technical Writing intern will assist RJG's Technical Writer in creating, organizing, and maintaining product documentation. This is a part time, temporary position that is perfect for a student or recent graduate with a passion for writing, technology, and clear communication. The ideal candidate will support documentation efforts by performing administrative tasks, formatting documents, proofreading content, and gathering information from subject matter experts (SMEs).

Reports to: Engineering Manager

Classification: Part-Time/Hourly/Non-Exempt/Temporary Internship (3-6 months)

Location: Remote and onsite in Traverse City, MI as needed

Essential Job Functions:

Documentation Support

  • Assist in writing, editing, and formatting technical documents, including user manuals, quick-start guides, FAQs, and internal documentation.
  • Organize and maintain documentation files and version control.
  • Format documents to ensure consistency and adherence to style guides.
  • Update existing documentation with minor revisions as directed by the technical writer.
  • Capture and annotate screenshots for documentation purposes.
  • Assist in creating simple diagrams or flowcharts using tools such as Microsoft Visio, Lucidchart, or Adobe Illustrator.
  • Help maintain an image and illustration database for documentation use.


Research & Information Gathering

  • Work with engineers, product managers, and customer support teams to collect and verify technical information.
  • Conduct research on industry standards, terminology, and best practices to enhance documentation accuracy.
  • Assist in organizing feedback from internal teams to improve documentation clarity.


Quality Assurance & Proofreading

  • Proofread technical content for grammar, spelling, clarity, and consistency.
  • Perform usability testing of documentation by following instructions to ensure clarity.
  • Assist in reviewing and implementing feedback from team members.


Administrative Support

  • Help with organizing documentation libraries and repositories.
  • Assist in publishing and distributing updated documents across internal and external platforms.
  • Support translation requests by coordinating with external vendors or translation software.
  • Provide general administrative support to the technical writing team.
  • Participate in team meetings and documentation planning discussions.
  • Work on special projects related to content management, document organization, or training materials.


Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, Journalism, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.


Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. (Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, Markdown, or XML for formatting documentation.
  • Interest in software, hardware, or engineering-related industries.
  • Elevated level of professionalism, self-driven, detail-oriented, and quality conscious “team player”.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively in both verbal and written forms.
  • Highly motivated, energetic, and willing to adapt to changing conditions.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage complex projects.


Work Environment: Office setting (home office, mobile office/vehicle) and virtual meeting spaces (Zoho Meetings, Teams, etc.).

Physical Demands: Bending, sitting, standing, walking, lifting to 20 lbs., extensive time at keyboard and desk.

Travel Expectations: None.
