We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Director of Finance with a strong background in the produce or agricultural industry. This role is responsible for overseeing all financial activities of the company, including accounting, financial reporting, cost analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and compliance. The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of seasonal revenue cycles, perishable inventory management, and produce distribution logistics.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with company goals
- Partner with executive leadership to support decision-making and business growth
- Advise on long-term business and financial planning
Accounting & Reporting
- Oversee general ledger, month-end close, and financial statement preparation
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements
- Maintain timely and accurate financial reporting
Budgeting & Forecasting
- Lead the annual budgeting process and rolling forecasts
- Monitor performance against budget and provide variance analysis
- Develop cash flow projections based on produce seasonality and market conditions
Costing & Inventory
- Implement and manage cost accounting systems tailored to farming and packing operations
- Analyze COGS and margin performance for fresh produce
- Oversee inventory valuation for perishable products and work-in-process
Operations & Supply Chain Finance
- Collaborate with production, logistics, and sales teams to support margin and pricing strategies
- Evaluate capital expenditures and return on investment (ROI) for new equipment and technology
- Identify and implement efficiency improvements across operations
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, including food safety-related financial controls
- Manage external audits, insurance, and banking relationships
- Mitigate risks related to crop insurance, commodity pricing, and labor costs
Team Management
- Lead and develop a finance and accounting team
- Support ERP implementation and upgrades if applicable
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
- 8 years of progressive experience in finance/accounting
- 3 years in a leadership role, ideally within the fresh produce or agri-business industry
- Experience with perishable inventory, cost accounting, and seasonal cash flow cycles
- Strong knowledge of ERP systems (e.g., Famous, Produce Pro, or equivalent)
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
