We are offering an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Research Attorney in California with 10 years of experience. As a key member of our team, you will be primarily focused on conducting comprehensive research related to maritime laws, both domestically and internationally. Your role will also include liaison with legislators in Washington DC on California maritime matters and preparing legal documents including research memos, contracts, and briefs.
This attorney should have stellar academic credentials and excellent writing skills (experience drafting briefs is strongly preferred, as this role may even require drafting Supreme Court briefs!).
Experience in maritime law is preferred; experience in environmental or international law is a close second.
This firm’s clients include large, international companies. Experience working with similar clientele is advantageous!

Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed legislative research on maritime laws impacting the cruise industry, including potential impacts of changes to port laws in Los Angeles.
- Liaise with Washington DC legislators on matters related to California maritime laws.
- Prepare and write detailed research memos on identified legal issues and developments.
- Draft legal contracts and other necessary documents.
- Write amicus briefs for submission to the Supreme Court as required.
- Maintain a scholarly approach to research and demonstrate a passion for this as a primary job function.
- Monitor changes to maritime laws in foreign countries and assess their potential impact on the industry.
Requirements:
- Top 100 law school
- Stability on resume
- 10 years of legal research & writing experience
- Experience drafting substantive legal briefs
- Experience in maritime, environmental, or international law
- CA bar
- Permanent residence in CA
- Meet 1800 billable hours requirement
- Updated resume (highlighting your strong research & writing skills)
- Writing sample (ideally an appellate or amicus brief)
- Where you live (preference for attorneys living in Southern California)
- How soon you can start (preference for ASAP, as their outgoing attorney has an end date)
