Job Description

This is heavy manual work providing general assistance to highway maintenance and mowing crews for Robertson County Government. Activities associated with the job include, but are not limited to performing manual labor, trimming and cutting trees, assisting with snow removal, utilizing flags for directing traffic and performing additional tasks as assigned by the immediate supervisor. Additional activities include seeding and placing straw after construction activities, assisting with patching small pot holes and assisting with loading and unloading materials and supplies utilized for highway construction and maintenance activities. Job responsibilities require some experience working with heavy equipment and machinery utilized for highway maintenance and repair, good decision making and interpersonal skills and sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions. Job performance is evaluated by the the immediate Foreman, Assistant Highway Superintendent and/or Highway Superintendent through review of the daily tasks completed, willingness to assist with work assignments, compliance with operating policies and procedures and ability to follow instructions and interact effectively with co-workers.

Illustrative Examples of Work

- Provides support to Robertson County highway workers, including crew leaders, equipment operators, etc., by performing any needed physical labor.

- Remove debris, trash, and dirt from highways, medians, right of ways, drainage ditches and other areas.

- Trims and cuts trees, rakes leaves, and uses weed trimmers to mow small areas.

- Assists in constructing and paving roads including shoveling asphalt, road patching/maintenance and other related tasks.

- Assists in the removal of snow from roadways.

- Assists in building catch basins and installing drain tile according to specifications.

- Loads and unloads equipment and materials and assists drivers in servicing equipment.

- Uses shovels and rakes in tight confined areas not accessible with heavy equipment or machinery.

- Utilizes flags and stop signs to direct traffic around job sites and other highway operations as required.

- Assists with patching and repairing small pot holes in roadways.

- Seeds and places straw over areas disturbed by road construction activities.

- Performs related work as required.

Necessary Requirements of Work

Graduation from an accredited high school (or GED); a minimum of six months experience in construction or related work; good decision making and interpersonal skills; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience to provide the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

- Knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around heavy equipment utilized in highway construction and maintenance projects.

- Knowledge of maintenance and construction hand and power tools, heavy equipment and highway department operations and practices.

- Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.

- Ability to perform very physically demanding work including lifting up to 100 lbs. occasionally and 25-40 lbs. frequently in a variety of weather conditions.

- Ability to safely use hand tools and power tools.

- Ability to work in all types of weather conditions.

- Ability to safely direct traffic around highway maintenance activities and remain observant of any potential safety hazards.

- Ability to maintain body equilibrium when walking or crouching on narrow spaces and/or slippery surfaces.

- Skill in the use of hand tools and power tools.

- Skill in the use of pickup trucks and other motor vehicles.

Necessary Special Requirements

- Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.

- CDL preferred but not required.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $15.42 - $17.09 per hour

Schedule:

  • 10 hour shift
  • Day shift
