Job Summary
The RIT Public Safety Department is a 24/7 operation, 365 days/year. This position is responsible for serving and protecting at any given time a community covering the entire 1,300-acre university campus with approximately 19,000 Students and 4,000 Faculty and Staff.
There are 3 different patrol shifts (Day, Afternoon, and Night) and the person hired will most likely be assigned to the afternoon or overnight shift, which includes shift differential pay. Required to be available for holidays, overtime, call-ins, possible shift changes on short notice, and rotating days off to maintain appropriate staffing levels and to staff special events throughout the year.

Major Responsibilities
Providing for public safety and security by maintaining order/policing, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing RIT policies, motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting positive community relations.
- Responds to service related requests promptly including quality of life complaints; utility interruptions; suspicious persons; money escorts (protecting employees transporting money on campus); special attention checks in high risk areas; motorist assists; residential and office lockouts; found property; emergency notifications; noise complaints; and other duties dictated by community reports.

Acts as first responder and preliminary investigator to campus incidents to assess, mitigate, investigate, gather evidence and document the occurrence. Examples such as:
- Robbery
- Theft of RIT property/services
- Assault
- Workplace violence
- Bias crimes
- Environmental complaints
- Fires
- Security/panic/fire alarms
- Fights in progress
- Medical and med-psych emergencies
- Drug possession/sale
- Intoxicated persons
- Missing persons
- Animal complaints
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Other university policy violations reported and/or observed.
- Follows-up for timely disposition on reported disputes; robbery; theft of RIT property/services; assault; workplace violence; bias crimes; environmental complaints; fires; security/panic/fire alarms; fights in progress; medical and med-psych emergencies; drug possession/sale; intoxicated persons; missing persons; animal complaints; motor vehicle accidents; and other university policy violations reported and/or observed.
- OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED, including participation in annual and as needed job-related training and courses to learn and maintain specialized skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to perform duties such as regular fire arms certification and on-going SERT training if applicable; defensive tactics; first aid; health and safety; use of force and related topics.
Required Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Certification, professional license, or credential: NYS Security Guard License
- 1 year related* experience in the public safety field or other related security fields.(*Related experience includes experience in campus or public safety, hospital safety and security, law enforcement, military, municipal policing or other related security fields.)
- Communication Proficiency - demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing to various campus constituencies, including using American Sign Language to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing persons; willingness to learn sign language and deaf culture
- Stress management/composure - demonstrated ability to use sound judgment and decision making in stressful situations; ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously and tactfully
- Willingness to learn and increase skill in police-related work
- Teamwork orientation along with a customer/client focus
- Ethical conduct
- Technical capacity - basic computer skills and ability to work with basic technology applications
- Rapid response to emergency situations involving threats of reported deadly physical force; or actual physical force with a deadly weapon.
- Successful completion of specialized training in skills, knowledge, and abilities that are necessary to deploy and use firearms on campus, and on-going SERT training along with regular in-service firearms training.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, or related field
- Hold a New York State Armed Guard License, New York State Pistol Permit, or have the ability to acquire both.
- Preference given to experience in campus policing, municipal policing, military policing or related field where firearms training was a requisite for employment.
