Communications Manager

Rock Creek Foundation
Silver Spring, MD Full Time
POSTED ON 4/3/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/2/2025
Who We Are

At Rock Creek Foundation, a subsidiary of The Sante Group, we believe that having a disability and/or a mental illness should not prevent anyone from having the opportunity to participate in everyday life. That’s why we have been pioneering the field of behavioral health services for the dually diagnosed. We want to ensure that each person we serve can develop the skills they need to live as independently as possible, in their own communities, and is able to realize his or her potential in ways that they could not do so before. Our committed staff of direct support professionals help drive our mission.

What We're Looking For

Rock Creek Foundation is seeking a mission-driven, strategic, and highly organized Communications Manager to lead our storytelling, digital engagement, and brand presence. In this hybrid role, you will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive communications strategy that elevates our mission, engages stakeholders, and strengthens our brand identity. As Communications Manager, you will manage and expand our digital footprint, oversee media relations, maintain brand consistency, and create compelling content across multiple channels. You will collaborate closely with an external marketing consultant—who recently helped refresh our brand—to ensure alignment in messaging, voice, and visuals. Additionally, you will work alongside the Development Manager to support fundraising initiatives and community engagement efforts. This role is ideal for a creative, detail-oriented storyteller who can balance strategy with execution, leveraging digital tools, media relationships, and content marketing to amplify Rock Creek Foundation’s impact. You will report directly to the Chief of Operations.

What You’ll Do

Digital Strategy & Social Media Management

  • Develop and implement a data-driven social media strategy that enhances brand awareness, fosters engagement, and supports organizational goals.
  • Create, curate, and schedule engaging content across platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.), ensuring alignment with Rock Creek Foundation’s new brand voice and visual identity.
  • Actively monitor, analyze, and report on social media performance, using insights to refine strategies and maximize reach.
  • Engage with our online community by responding to comments, messages, and mentions to build strong relationships with followers.
  • Stay updated on social media trends and best practices to keep our digital presence fresh and impactful.

Website & Online Presence

  • Maintain and regularly update the Rock Creek Foundation website to ensure information is current, engaging, and aligned with our mission.
  • Conduct periodic website audits and collaborate with external consultants for major updates or redesigns.
  • Optimize Google Business, Guidestar, Charity Navigator, and other nonprofit profiles to enhance visibility and credibility.
  • Utilize SEO best practices to improve searchability and engagement.

Branding & Visual Content Creation

  • Ensure that all communications, marketing materials, and digital assets adhere to Rock Creek Foundation’s branding guidelines.
  • Design basic graphics, flyers, and digital materials using Canva, coordinating with colleagues for program-specific collateral when needed.
  • Develop multimedia content (videos, infographics, testimonials) to enhance storytelling and campaign effectiveness.

Media Relations & Storytelling

  • Identify key media outlets and cultivate relationships to increase coverage of Rock Creek Foundation’s work.
  • Draft and distribute press releases, op-eds, and media pitches, positioning Rock Creek Foundation as a thought leader in the field.
  • Coordinate interviews and serve as the primary liaison with journalists, ensuring timely and effective press engagement.
  • Gather and package compelling stories, testimonials, and impact narratives from staff, program participants, and community partners.

Email Marketing & Content Strategy

  • Develop and manage a monthly email newsletter using Neon, crafting compelling content that informs and inspires supporters.
  • Collaborate with program staff and leadership to source relevant stories, news, and updates for distribution.
  • Utilize MemoryFox and other digital storytelling tools to collect and curate high-quality photos, videos, and testimonials.

Strategic Collaboration & Campaign Support

  • Work closely with the Development Manager and Partnership Manager to ensure communications align with fundraising, donor engagement, and advocacy efforts.
  • Support the planning and execution of major campaigns, events, and community initiatives through coordinated promotional strategies.
  • Provide regular reports to the Chief of Operations, offering insights on content performance, audience engagement, and impact measurement.

What We Require

  • 2–4 years of experience in communications, nonprofit marketing, journalism, or related fields
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills across formats and platforms
  • Experience managing organizational social media accounts with a strategic voice
  • Familiarity with digital platforms including Canva, Neon, Meta Business Suite, and Mailchimp or similar tools
  • Ability to independently gather stories from staff and program teams
  • Strong project management skills and ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English preferred)
  • Experience working with MemoryFox or similar story-gathering platforms
  • Basic photo, video, or audio editing skills
  • Understanding of nonprofit development or fundraising communications
  • Desire to understand the Maryland disability nonprofit landscape
